Iron Man kicked off 2026 with a fresh new direction, thanks to Joshua Williamson taking over as writer alongside artists Carmen Carnero, Jan Bazaldua, and Juan Cabal. Williamson has already shown through his work at DC Comics on Batman, Flash, and Superman that he knows how to handle a company’s biggest superheroes. So far, he has brought that same level of quality to Iron Man with a refreshing take on Tony Stark’s world. The success of this latest volume comes down to several key factors.
TONY STARK RETURNS TO HIS IRON MAN FORM

Joshua Williamson and Carmen Carnero did not waste time showing what their take on the Iron Man will be. Iron Man #1 opens with Tony quickly taking down defeating Blizzard. He then makes a grand appearance on his new hoverbike and joins a rock band to open the Tony Stark Award ceremony. This showed Tony is back to his live life to the fullest personality.
At the same time, throughout the first six issues of the series Williamson shows how this isn’t simply a reboot of the Iron Man franchise. Even if it is not said, a lot of the actions we see Tony take in and out of his Iron Man armor is due to his past experiences. Whether it is his successes or failures, Tony has a new lease on life that has him returning to form.
This take on Tony is helped by the more adventurous superhero tone we see taken with the new direction. Every issue we see Tony somewhere in the world. How active A.I.M. was during the first story arc certainly helped with all the changes in setting. By having such a situation, we see how Iron Man is truly a global superhero. He isn’t just protecting one corner of Earth or sticking to what the Avengers are doing. He will go where his villains may be in order to stop them.
FINDING THE NEXT TONY STARK

One of the big developments that Williamson introduced during his opening story arc was the search for who could be the next Tony Stark. That started with the Tony Stark Award ceremony in Iron Man #1. The Tony Stark Award was made to recognize someone from the next generation’s scientific and engineering contributions, with Adam Ware being the 2026 recipient.
This award ended up being a double edge sword because it helped A.I.M. find and kidnap young people with the potential of Tony Stark. Ultimately, Tony was able to save most of those who A.I.M. kidnapped except for Adam Ware, more on him in a bit. This opened Tony’s mind that he needed to do more than just acknowledge talented people with an award. Tony used this experience with A.I.M. to open the Stark School of Super-Science at the end of Iron Man #5.
While we still have not seen this school in action it gives Tony something else to invest in other than new tech or his Iron Man duties. This could provide an avenue to show that there are many ways for these new characters to contribute to the Marvel Universe. If the school is truly a long-term thing it can be something we see other Iron Man characters like James Rhodes and Riri Williams help with.
MADAME MASQUE REVITALIZES A.I.M.

Like many villain organizations, A.I.M. has lost a lot of its credibility as a group in the Marvel Universe. While they occasionally show up in a variety of stories it has been a long time since they’ve been viewed as a serious threat. That was until Madame Masque took over and led A.I.M. in her vision.
As mentioned, part of Madame Masque’s vision for A.I.M. was to find the next Tony Stark and have them work for the organization. While Tony was able to stop A.I.M. and rescue most of those kidnapped he failed to save Adam Ware. Because of that it created the next big mad scientist in the Marvel Universe.
That was shown as the experience Adam Ware went through altered him to use his intelligence to usurp Madame Masque and lead A.I.M. With Adam Ware being shown to have the potential to be on the level of Tony Stark we could see A.I.M. being stronger than ever.
STAGE SET FOR IRON MAN VS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE

A.I.M. is not the only thing that Iron Man needs to worry about. There is another threat to Tony Stark’s revitalized personal and superhero path. That threat is much closer than A.I.M. as it is some of Iron Man’s closest superhero allies. The end of Iron Man #1 shows that Captain America, Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Captain Marvel, War Machine, and other heroes see Tony Stark as a threat.
Why this is suddenly the case is a major question. Though we see with the way Tony is acting throughout the first six issues of this Iron Man series it is understandable. There is a lot of examples of how reckless Tony is operating as Iron Man with how he tries to stop A.I.M. and later goes after Norman Osborn.
If that wasn’t enough, we saw in Avengers: Armageddon #1 that Tony developed a machine to counter Red Hulk’s What If machine. This along with other questionable actions provides enough a reason for the heroes to watch Tony much more closely. If things continue as they are we could see a major event from Marvel be about the Avengers and others trying to stop a rogue Iron Man.
