ABSOLUTE BATMAN #18
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Eric Canete
Colorist: Frank Martin
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Absolute Batman #18 is a comic book that feels like the calm before the storm of something big. You get that with every scene that there is in this issue. There are many things that happen with Batman, Martha Wayne, Jim Gordon, Poison Ivy, and many more characters that all builds on each other. It is a change coming to Gotham City that could very well change the foundation of this series. That is emphasized by the final action Bruce Wayne takes at the very end of this issue. It highlights where he is mentally after everything he’s been through in Absolute Batman’s 18 issues thus far.

IMPERIAL GUARDIANS #1
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Marcelo Ferreira
Inker: Jay Leisten
Colorist: Rachelle Rosenberg
Letterer: Cory Petit
There is no time wasted in Imperial Guardians #1 to showcase the power and teamwork of the new Guardians of the Galaxy-esque cosmic superteams. The mix of Captain Marvel, Gamora, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Darkhawn, and Brawn works extremely well. It speaks to Dan Abnett’s sense of story pacing that he knows when his writing should let Marcelo Ferreira’s artwork shine. That tone is established from the moment you open this comic book. That allows the more plot heavy parts of Imperial Guardians #1 to shine, as a strong foundation is set for this series.
Overall Rating: 8.5 Night Girls out of 10
STORM: EARTH’S MIGHTIEST MUTANT #2
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Murewa Ayodele
Artist: Federica Mancin
Colorist: Java Tartaglia
Letterer: Travis Lanham
Storm: Earth’s Mightiest Mutant #2 keeps up the momentum created by the debut issue of this sequel series. It sets up a lot of building blocks for what Storm is doing with a variety of allies as many mysterious deaths happen across the world. How it is connected back to Storm does a good job of making you wonder exactly what is going on. That’s on top of how Storm continues to deal with the aftermath of the Thunder War she was involved in. Having that sense of wonder in this mystery is a good hook to keep you wanting to read more.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #16
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Gene Luen Yang
Artists: Freddie E. Williams and Fero Pe
Colorists: Andrew Dalhouse and Luis Antonio Delgado
Letterer: Shawn Lee
Splinter’s revival has an impact that means more than a family reunion. His return has an impact on what death means in the TMNT’s world and how others could use that as a weapon. That is something Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #16 emphasizes with how Casey Jones and Karai act on the knowledge of Splinter’s return. It goes to show that there is so much more going on than what it means for Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo to be reunited with their father. Given this added wait to Splinter’s return creates greater investment in every storyline and sub-plot going on in TMNT.

TRANSFORMERS #30
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Dan Mora
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Transformers #30 delivers a powerful clash that decides the future direction of the Autobots in the Energon Universe. Optimus Prime and Elita-1 prove why they are key deciding figures during and after the clash they have. The actions taken by not just these two but also the rest of the Autobots build even greater investment in what the future will be for the franchise moving forward. X-MEN UNITED #1
CREATIVE TEAM
Writer: Eve L. Ewing
Artist: Tiago Palma
Colorist: Brian Reber
Letterer: Joe Sabino
Immediately when reading X-Men United #1 you get the feeling it is filling a hole that needed to be filled a long time ago for the X-Men franchise. Having the veteran X-Men teaching the next generation is exactly something you want to see these characters doing. The danger room training was so needed. At the same time, Eve Ewing and Tiago Palma make sure that X-Men United is not a simple fresh start. Too much has gone on with the veteran X-Men. That history comes into play in intriguing ways that makes you wonder how this will impact both this and the other X-Men titles.
