It’s time for another round of comic book reviews. There were a lot of major releases this week to talk about. With that in mind this week we’ll be covering Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow’s Hand, Absolute Green Arrow #5, Avengers: Armageddon #4, Daredevil #7, Dark Knights of Steel II #3, Detective Comics #1113, Exquisite Corpses: Fox Mask Killer #1, G.I. Joe #26, New Titans #39, Nightwing #142, and Power Rangers Unlimited #3. Find out how these comic books turned out with the latest comic book reviews round-up below.
ABSOLUTE CASSANDRA CAIN: THE SHADOW’S HAND

Che Grayson and Matias Bergara maximize the page count given to them for Absolute Cassandra Cain: The Shadow’s Hand to tell a complete story. Not only do you feel like you get everything you need to know about Absolute Cassandra Cain but also Lady Shiva and several other characters introduced. This does a lot to fill out the Absolute Universe that shows us how single changes to a character’s origin can avalanche into massive alterations for the world. By the end Absolute Cassandra Cain is established as one of the most intriguing characters in the Absolute Universe.

ABSOLUTE GREEN ARROW #5

For as action and lore heavy Absolute Green Arrow #5 is, the entire issue comes across as a check the box penultimate issue. This fifth issue had the job to get us to the big hook ending of Absolute Black Canary putting the puzzle pieces together. She gets their having to survive against Absolute Solomon Grundy. Meanwhile we get more information about Absolute Malcolm Merlyn that did feel like it was there to swerve us. We will find out the truth about who the Green Arrow Killer is next issue.

AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON #4

Avengers: Armageddon #4 certain lived up to this being a key moment for the Marvel Universe with the debut of David Colton as Miracleman. That alone makes this chapter of Marvel’s 2026 big event notable. The rest of this issue does a very good job creating a spectacle out of the clash between Red Hulk and all the heroes. There are also things done that set-up several sub-plots that can spin out of Avengers: Armageddon due to the actions of Red Hulk allowing one country almost destroying the world. Those things made the big hook ending around Miracleman’s debut effectively set the stage for the finale of this event.

DAREDEVIL #7

“Of Moles & Owls” continues to be a return to the grounded, street-level that has been missing from Daredevil, as this series was consumed with the mystic side of the franchise. Daredevil #7 does a very good job of how seeing the Man Without Fear deailing with the mafia problems of New York City can create a lot of excitement. Stephanie Phillips keeps it simple by giving us chase and hand-to-hand fighting scenes. The only thing holding this story back is Flaviano’s artwork. The art style is just not a match for Daredevil.

DARK KNIGHTS OF STEEL II #3

Dark Knights of Steel II #3 keeps the medieval drama going with Amanda Waller executing the next part of her plan. The trigger for that part of Amanda Waller’s plan comes in brutal fashion that shows how no matter how much she planned out nothing will be as envisioned. Which worked to further the villainous plot going on in the world. This leaves all the heroes in a spot where they are playing catch-up to first figure out why things have happened. Which works to bring Batman back into the fold to be immediately important. What’s next, especially with Waller does at the end, should kick the story to another level.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1113

Detective Comics #1113 does its job of continuing the Bad Seeds crossover from how things ended in Batman #13. Keeping the attention on Batman and Vandal Savage’s conflict does create a focused experience to help transition both characters to where they need to go next. That said, this same focus on Batman and Vandal Savage is the weakness of this chapter of Bad Seeds. You don’t feel like Bad Seeds is a big franchise crossover as we are missing Poison Ivy and others involved. The same goes for how Gotham City lacks that lived in feel to show how much what is going on in Bad Seeds is impacting the status quo. These things hold Bad Seeds back from hitting the highs you expect from a big-time crossover event.

EXQUISITE CORPSES: FOX MASK KILLER #1

If you didn’t think it before than Exquisite Corpses: Fox Mask Killer #1 shows you why Naomi Yatsurugi is the most compelling characters of the original series. From the get-go we see how Naomi as the Fox Mask Killer is an absolute badass. Past that opening we get a compelling tale of how much depth there is behind Naomi’s character even when she’s not wearing the mask. Even when there is no action happening the pacing is non-stop as you get even more invested in where Naomi Yatsurugi journey will go.

G.I. JOE #26

G.I. Joe #26 wasted no time in continuing the momentum created by the opening chapter of the Night Force story arc. There was no time to waste as the Joes had to protect Baroness from those hunting her. The problem for the Joes is that they are fighting those as equally skilled as them in the Night Force. The additional sub-plots sprinkled in throughout this issue create even greater intrigue as to what other developments will happen in future issues of this series. Click here to read the full review.

NEW TITANS #39

After an awkward introduction of Static in the previous issue, New Titans #39 starts a new story arc centered around the Amazons of the Amazon. Getting the focus on the next big story of this series is exactly what is needed. Tate Brombal is immediately able to focus on the team dynamic while using Static new member status to emphasize the craziness and wonder of what is going on. The pacing of this opening chapter of “The Spirit of the Amazon” is what is most impressive. We get a lot of mythology building without feeling rushed. Everything happens at a natural pace that keeps you engaged in everything going on.

NIGHTWING #142

Nightwing #142 does exactly what it needs to do to emphasize the impact the Bad Seeds crossover is having. Even if he isn’t living in Gotham City, what Poison Ivy and Vandal Savage did to kickstart this crossover is pulling everyone in to deal with their actions. Dan Watters does a very good job utilizing recent events in this series with Nightwing to show the weight of being dealing with what is going on in Gotham City. David Lapham artwork also helps to emphasize how bleak things feel in a Gotham City overrun by Poison Ivy’s plants. Even though this is more of a tie-in, the combination of Watters writing with Lapham’s artwork make Nightwing #142 the best issue of the Bad Seeds crossover thus far.

POWER RANGERS UNLIMITED #3

Power Rangers Unlimited #3 is the best issue of the series thus far. Between the sci-fi heist involving Serpentera to the fantastic chemistry of the Power Rangers team Trini assembled, this is just a blast to read. It is made all the better by the excellent artwork by Alessio Zonno that takes Kenny Porter and Joey Esposito writing to another level. A must-buy for all Power Rangers’ fans.
