Power Rangers Unlimited #3 continues to the journey of the Trini Kwan led series. Thus far we have Trini assemble several different Power Ranger squads from various teams to take on threats across the franchise. That is going to continue in this third issue as the Power Rangers team Trini is assembly has been given the goal of stopping Serpentera from being used by other villains. Power Rangers Unlimited #3 is a comic book that you do feel like the cuffs are off for this series. That is saying a lot given how excellent the first two issues of this series are. The key difference is what this issue sets out to do. Where the first two issues keep up the sci-fi storytelling of the franchise Power Rangers Unlimited #3 adds to that. Not only do we keep the sci-fi storytelling but we get a heist-themed story that is just a blast.
The heist aspect of the story is where we truly see the concept of Power Rangers Unlimited shine. Through this writer Kenny Porter and Joey Esposito are able to emphasize why each Power Ranger that Trini recruits are important to the mission. It isn’t just about their connection the villains. Conner McKnight, Will Aston, Sarah Thompson, and Z Delgado each have skills on top of their Power Rangers’ powers that make them ideal for this mission.
Best of all they make sure that this is all done in a show rather than tell. From the way the team interacts with each other and high society auction setting they are amplify the strong dynamic they already share. You get a sense through all the interactions that Trini knew how to put Conner, Will, Sarah, and Z in roles that makes them shine. That in turn helps to further showcase what makes Trini a strong leader.
The Power Rangers squad mix also helps makes the set-up of Broodwing as the perfect antagonist for this story. His design along makes you believe that Broodwing would be a Power Rangers villain that would host such a high society-like auction. That helps a lot so the focus doesn’t have to be about what Power Rangers season Broodwing is a part of.
Broodwing’s auction being centered around someone gaining control of Serpentera is a great way to add urgency to this mission. Serpentera has long been established as one of the most powerful Zords in Power Rangers history. The way Power Rangers Unlimited #3 presents Serpentera anytime it is on screen further emphasizes this.
Speaking of design, Alenssio Zonno absolutely knocks it out of the park with his best work thus far on this series. Zonno does a fantastic job making this a strong sci-fi heist story. The attention to detail with all the different aliens that are attending Broodwing’s auction helps show how big of a deal Serpentera is. Then there is how Zonno showcases Trini, Conner, Will, Sarah, and Z as a team. Whether its their individual special skills or teamwork, by the end of Power Rangers Unlimited #3 you are sold on this being the team moving forward for the series if the creative team so choose.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Power Rangers Unlimited #3 is the best issue of the series thus far. Between the sci-fi heist involving Serpentera to the fantastic chemistry of the Power Rangers team Trini assembled, this is just a blast to read. It is made all the better by the excellent artwork by Alessio Zonno that takes Kenny Porter and Joey Esposito writing to another level. A must-buy for all Power Rangers’ fans.
