Yumi: 00EX #2 does not take the foot off the gas as the momentum created by the debut is carried over to this second issue. Right away Doug Wagner and Hoyt Silva start things hot with a personal battle for Yumi. That fight transitions into having us learn more about the world as Yumi searches for her boyfriend.
The big thing that stands out when reading Yumi: 00EX #2 is not the great action spy thriller story. It is the fact of how much this story feels as much inspired by the Scott Pilgrim series. Throughout this issue we see Yumi battle several of Richard’s exes. The personalities of all these exes remind you of how things went in the Scott Pilgrim series.
While that inspiration is clear, the spy aspect is not diminished. The characters that we see Yumi run into and fight have a lot of the classic spy villain tropes. The fighting styles and weapons these characters Yumi fight all come across as unique to them. This helps amplify the characters personality to stand out throughout the screen time they get.
More importantly, it helps get you further get invested in Yumi’s journey as she searches for Richard. We see how she is constantly having to think on her feet. That is something that throughout this adventure you don’t feel is out of the normal for Yumi. This is what she’s done her entire life. But this time Yumi has to pull of cool martial arts and spy skills out in order to survive.
Throughout the story that Wagner writers it is Silva’s artwork that is the standout. Silva’s artwork adds so much personality to the series that feels its own. Creating that identity helps all the characters living in this world standout. Which helps out when the action goes on as Silva makes sure the choreography is unique to the combatants in each fight. The scenes were we get some of the chibi-style art that helps to further enhance the way Yumi is developed as a character. Everything comes together for a great looking comic book.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Yumi: 00EX #2 is a fantastic follow-up to the strong debut this Doug Wagner and Hoyt Silva mini-series. They keep up the momentum with some great action sequences and character development as we follow Yumi’s search for her boyfriend. By the end of this issue you are left even more excited to find out what is going on with the journey Yumi has found herself on.
