This week sees a normal sized shipment of comic books headed to the Bunker today. We are getting a total of 14 titles. This week is heavier with Marvel titles than DC titles. This is a monster week since we are getting the latest installments of both Final Crisis and Secret Invasion.

Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Superman: New Krypton Special #1 should be a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen Special #1. It was an entertaining read that immediately grabbed my attention and acted as a fine lead-in to Superman: New Krypton Special #1. Johns’ Brainiac story arc over on Action Comics ended with a stunning finale. It should be interesting to see where Johns takes this story involving the un-bottled city of Kandor.

However, the DC comic book that I am most looking forward to reading is Final Crisis #4. I have enjoyed Morrison’s big event. The first three issues have laid a strong foundation for this story and provided for plenty of build-up. Final Crisis #4 is a pivotal issue as it is now time for Morrison to give the reader a bit of pay-off for all the set-up we have gotten in the first three issues. Some action is necessary as well as plenty of plot development.

Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Trinity #21. I never read the new Firestorm’s comic book for a reason. His character has absolutely no appeal for me. And as long as he is headlining the story on Trinity, my already dampened enthusiasm for this title is reduced even more so.

Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Captain America #43 is sure to be another strong read. Brubaker is so consistently good with this title. I am curious to see where Brubaker takes this title now that he has concluded his massive Lukin/Red Skull story.

Ultimate Spider-Man #127 should be an entertaining read. Bendis always delivers the goods on this title. It appears that we get the dramatic return from the dead of Gwen Stacy. This should be fun.

In the end, I had to go with X-Factor #36 as the Marvel comic book that I am most looking forward to reading. Yes, the obligatory Skrull tie-in issues on X-Factor were far below the usual quality of writing that we get on this title. However, since we have gotten the perfunctory Secret Invasion tie-in issues over with I fully expect David to resume making X-Factor the best read out of all of the X-titles.

Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? Hulk #7 is sure to be another poor read. This title is just dumb. I was only staying on with this title because I was curious about the red Hulk’s identity.

Secret Invasion #7 does not excite me that much. This big event is overstayed its welcome and I am just weary of this story. It has taken too long and has delivered way too small of a pay-off.

However, the Marvel comic book that I am least looking forward to reading is New Avengers #46. The Secret tie-in issues on Mighty Avengers and New Avengers have become practically unreadable as it is patently obvious that Bendis is just killing time until Secret Invasion concludes.

As always, I’ll try my best to start posting reviews as soon as possible. I hope everyone enjoys their new comic books for this week.

  1. An all-Marvel (three of them by Ed Brubaker) week: Captain America, Criminal, Daredevil, Ms. Marvel, Secret Invasion, She-Hulk

SI was about average; the others varied from very pleasant to great.
