It looks like The Revolution is getting a monster sized shipment of comic books headed to the Bunker today. We have a total of 12 titles for this week. This week is a bit heavier with DC titles than Marvel titles for the first time in a couple of weeks. As always, I’ll try to post as many reviews as possible.

Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? That would be Action Comics #851 since we finally return to the “Last Son” storyline. It sucks that it has taken so long to resume this story, but it is still a very entertaining tale that Johns and Donner have crafted.

Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? Probably Nightwing #134. This title just continues to be nothing more than average. I really hope that the events of Countdown can finally give Nightwing some direction and purpose as well as place him in a more central role within the new DCU.

Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? This is so ridiculously easy. Thor #1. C’mon, we have been waiting quite some time for the Thunder God to finally make his triumphant and dramatic return. I’m interested to see how I enjoy JMS’s writing on this title. I used to love everything by JMS, but then I suddenly soured on his work. His stuff over the past two years on Amazing Spider-Man has gotten progressively worse. His writing on Fantastic Four before he left was just horrid. And I couldn’t even begin to stomach his efforts over on Squadron Supreme. Hopefully, JMS returns to form and gives me a well written debut issue for Thor.

Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Uncanny X-Men #488. So far Brubaker has gotten scores of 8, 9, 7, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 8, 8 and 6 for his writing efforts on this title. I am an unabashed Brubaker fan as you can tell from my reviews of Daredevil, Iron Fist, Captain America and Criminal. I’m surprised, but I guess not everything that Brubaker touches turns to gold.

I’ll try my best to start posting reviews as soon as possible. I hope everyone enjoys their new comic books for this week.

  1. New Avengers/Transformers? Really?

    I’m getting:

    Detective Comics #834
    Ms. Marvel #17
    Runaways #27
    Thor #1
    Uncanny X-Men #488

I came to the conclusion that Countdown just wasn’t working for me; the fact that DC is prepping approximately one million tie-ins on top of a 52-issue series was the dealbreaker (also, despite the intriguing Mary Marvel story, I just wasn’t enjoying it all that much). From now on, I’ll just read the many, many spoiler synopses posted around the ‘net.

I’ll be interested to see what JMS does with Thor; given his seemingly never-ending obsession with shoving magic into Spider-Man, Thor seems like a good place for him (although, then again, I’d have thought the creator of Babylon 5 would have been a much better fit for Fantastic Four than he turned out to be).

Elsewhere, there’s the conclusion of the Zatanna two-parter in DC, the conclusion of the fun MODOK story in Ms. Marvel, the third part of Joss Whedon’s already-delayed Runaways run, and the next UXM (with an “Endangered Species” backup that I’m looking forward to, in addition to the main story).

  2. You probably get a pretty good discount where you go but if you don’t mind waiting a few days, mailordercomics.com sells a lot of discount comics. You do have to pay shipping but it still comes out to about 30-40 percent off after its all said and done. Also, jellyfish.com gives you cash back for buying there as well.

  3. Speaking of Transformers, what did you think of the commercial, I mean movie? I thought it was pretty awesome but I got tired of all the commercials.
    1) GM – they were all GM and when they transformed, it focused on the grill to show it.
    2) apple – why was every computer used in the movie apple including the old dusty one
    3) nokia – did he seriously need to open and swivel the screen as he placed it in there. Then did they really need to talk about how awesome Nokia was.
    4) ebay – “where did you find it” asked Sam? “I found it on Ebay” replied Prime. Seriously, come on… they should pay me to watch it. I loved the movie but what could have been a classic is now very dated. That’s almost as bad as the fantasticar being Dodge and the human torch asking if it had a hemi.

  4. @islandliberal – do you think the countdown series will continue to tie in or do you think that was an isolated incident with the lightning saga so they could bring karate kid into the series?

I hope they do more tie-ins as I’m loving the story however I can see how the 52 issue series, the tie-ins and then that is just the middle crisis could discourage even the most dedicated reader.

  5. brantley – Countdown was conceived as the “spine” the DCU, so it will continue to tie-in; DC has solicited several tie-in miniseries and specials in future months.

  6. I thought the movie was good. Only the constant ebay referances were distracting to me. But, it did firmly ground it to our reality.

Are you going to review the movie when go see it, like you did for the Legion animated series?
