Though it does not feel like it, we are already at the end of March. With that it is time to look back at all the best moments from the comic book world over the past month. March was another big month of moments throughout the comic book world. From Superman’s history being clarified to Bane dominating Batman to new developments for the Green Lantern Corps, there was plenty of things to love for the month of March in 2017. Now let’s take a look at what made the best moments from the comic book world in March 2017.
Action Comics #975
There were a lot of nostalgic moments during the course of the ‘Superman Reborn’ arc. But the best of them all was during the back-up for Action Comics #975. As seen in the image above, DC actually brought in all the most well-known versions of Superman into existing in the current continuity of the DC Multiverse. Seeing the Superman: The Animated Series version of the character alone was enough to make this one of the best moments in March.
Action Comics #976
As cool as it was to go through a nostalgic ride and seeing all the fan favorite versions of Superman, that was not the point of ‘Superman Reborn.’ What the story needed to do was bring together the pre-Flashpoint and New 52 version of Superman and somehow merge them into one, less confusing version of the character. Though there may be some questions that still linger, at least this splash page gives us a very good idea of what Superman’s history in the current DCU is.
All-New Wolverine #18
For a story all about Laura Kinney overcoming her past as X-23 and accepting her future as Wolverine it was surprising to see ‘Enemy of the State II’ end with Laura killing Kimura. It was an conclusion, in the way it was done, that was surprising but something that still works in with how Laura has grown at Wolverine. It also good to have a hero willing to kill when necessary. It’s something that Logan did when needed, as he was one of the only Marvel hero willing to do so.
All-New Batman #8
Duke Thomas journey to discover what role he is going to take on within the Batman Family continues to be one the most fascinating story threads in the franchise right now. Seeing him visit one of his friends and seeing how the children of Gotham City view him alongside the rest of the Batman Family was a fun way to continue that development.
Amazing Spider-Man #25
Outside the recent events of The Clone Conspiracy, the old “Parker Luck” has not been something that has hit Peter hard since becoming one of the richest person in the Marvel Universe. But while the “Parker Luck” hasn’t appeared often it is still not something that has vanished, as seen in the above moment with Aunt May ruining Peter’s moment to try and ask out Bobby.
Batgirl Annual #1
It may be because of the DCAU, but I’ve always enjoyed the dynamic between Batgirl and Supergirl. The two bring something out of each other that makes their team-ups a lot of fun to see. Even friendly banter is more fun because of the dynamic they share.
Bane destroying Batman in a fight is nothing new. We’ve seen this type of fight many times before. What made this latest one-sided fight standout was this moment with Batman smiling and telling Bane to “shut up.” That act of defience goes to show who is in control in this situation.
Feeding off the previous moment, it was very intense to see Bane absolutely tearing his way through Batman’s Rogues Gallery. It is a reminder of when things were flipped and Bane had Batman run through a gauntlet of villains during the Knightfall arc.
Black Widow #12
Seeing how Natasha has grown since first appearing as Black Widow in the Marvel Universe has been one of the most fascinating aspects of Waid and Samnee’s run. This scene between Natasha and her old friend shows how far Natasha has grown over the years as she found another way to defeat her foe than just killing or disabling her.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #16
This issue of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps was absolutely brutal. Guy and Arkillo held nothing back from one another as they absolutely brutalized each other. How Guy overcame Arkillo by using his past with his old man as motivation made his victory more sweet for him.
Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #17
As much as it sucks to see Kyle Rayner have his White Lantern powers taken away it is just as great to see him back as a Green Lantern Corps. As much as I’ve love everything that has been done with Hal since his return, Kyle will always be my Green Lantern as he is the one I grew up reading in that role.
Invincible has always thrown everything out the window about what we expect from superhero comic books. This moment of Terra laughing at her parents superhero costumes is just another fun example, as she calls out Invicible and Atom Eve for how silly they look.
Iron Fist #1
With Iron Fist about to participate in a martial arts tournament, in the vein of Dragon Ball, this fight with a new character was a good preview for things to come. At least that is what I hope this was.
Justice League/Power Rangers #3
The Power Rangers have never been known for being great about cleanly defeating their villains. More often than not it fights are just the Rangers overpowering their villains. Seeing Kimberly tell Wonder Woman and Green Lantern how they should handle the monsters just reminds you how simple their approach to dealing with villains really is.
Everytime I see Nightwing and Robin together again just makes me wish there was a Dynamic Duo title starring the two. The dynamic between the two is different from everything else in the Batman Family and this shows how even with how different they are, Nightwing and Robin are brothers.
March was all about revisiting old versions of characters or stories within the DC Universe, whether in continuity or not. Though this vision of other versions of Nightwing may not mean much to the bigger picture of the DCU, it was another look at how many different versions of the character we’ve seen over the years.
Old Man Logan #20
As much as Logan has become the X-Men’s poster child his reach goes beyond the franchise. This is a good reminder of his greater connection to the Marvel Universe and how he has his own history seperate from the X-Men.
Super Sons #2
Guess we know that Damian at least takes the whole “Teen” part of the Teen Titans extremely serious. Looks like Superboy still has another birthday to go through before he becomes a Teen Titans.
Teen Titans #6
Always hate it when one person in the group that has to try to dectate how everyone should eat. And Beast Boy should know that there is no way anyone will pass up some good pizza.
Titans Annual #1
This looks to be the first step into fully going into a modern day version of “Who is Donna Troy?” arc. It’s a big question that Dan Abnett has been teasing for a bit. Hopefully when he does get to it that it doesn’t leave more questions than answers and DC doesn’t over complicate Donna’s history after that, like they did in the previous DCU continuity.
The Clone Conspiracy: Omega #1
The impact of The Clone Cospiracy hit the hardest during this scene between Spider-Man and Rhino. Rhino’s violent reaction followed by asking Spider-Man how he should deal with what happened, after calming down, was a very tough moment to read. It really goes to show how great the ramifications of bringing back people to life can be on those that love them.
X-Men: Prime #1
The X-Men needed someone to get them back on track of being heroes, rather than just people trying to survive. Having Kitty Pryde be that person felt fitting. This speech by Kitty firmly establishes the new heroic direction of the X-Men and her role as leader of the entire team.
