Miracleman is a character that Marvel has spent over 15 years trying to figure out how to bring into the Marvel Universe. There have been various hints at Miracleman making his debut during that period during various events. Finally, after many teases Marvel finally brought Miracleman into the main Marvel Universe in Avengers: Armageddon #4. The debut of Miracleman was an extension of the character arc for David Colton, a character that made his own debut a little over a year ago in July 2025.
How did we finally get here with Miracleman making his debut? And what does David Colton as Miracleman mean for the Marvel Universe? Let’s break it down.
DAVID COLTON: THE LOST CAPTAIN AMERICA
Chip Zdarsky started his run on Captain America by modernizing Steve Rogers history by updating the period when he was unfrozen by the Avengers. While this updated origin Steve Rogers does not state the official year, on purpose, it is shown he wakes up in a post-9/11 world. And as they done at various points during Steve Rogers disappearance, post-9/11 the United States once again re-invested in their Super Soldier Program.
This is where David Colton comes in. Motivated to not let another 9/11 happen a young David Colton enlisted into the army even though a frail kid suffering from severe asthma. Even when he faced much abuse due to his perceived weakness from his military peers and superiors David showed he had a strong enough will to become part of the Super Soldier Program. David successfully took part in the Super Soldier Program and became Captain America, taking part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Unfortunately, David’s time as Captain America didn’t go smoothly. While he participated in many successful operations when an explosion killed part of his squad the remaining members attempted to kill all the people in the city whether they were innocent or not. In a fit of rage David beat to death the soldier killing people. While the US military officials were able to cover up this incident David was forced to “retire” as Captain America and was shifted over to being a covert agent.
Sometime later, soon after his return Steve decided to rejoin the military rather than the Avengers. Steve was sent on a rescue mission to Latvaria with David as a member of his squad. After many revelations about Doctor Doom and USA’s ties made by David he turned against who he thought were his allies. Seeing blood on his hands Steve was forced to stop David from killing more people. After all this Tony Stark had surgeons implant an Arc-Reactor in David to counter the version of the Super Soldier serum that was found to be killing him.
DAVID COLTON BECOMES MIRACLEMAN
In the years after the Latvaria mission David Colton lived a life of seclusion. That was until he became involved in a conflict with Primewarrior, an organization who had their own Super Soldier Program. While teaming up with Wolverine against Nuke and other Primewarrior Super Soldiers, David was fatally shot. Wolverine would save David by giving him one of the Earth-6160 Origin Boxes. This Origin Box gave David Superman-like powers.
That brings us to Avengers: Armageddon. While the event has featured the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men it has been made clear Avengers: Armageddon has been built around David Colton as the lead. He has been the main driving force on the hero side, acting as the clear counter to Red Hulk’s lead antagonist role.
The payoff for positioning David Colton in this way finally showed itself in Avengers: Armageddon #4 with the explosive reveal of who he really is meant to be in the Marvel Universe. That was none other than Miracle Man.
DAVID COLTON’S MIRACLEMAN: THE IMPERFECT SUPERMAN
The explosive reveal was handled in a way that certainly does feel like the landscape of Marvel has changed. But we don’t know exactly how the landscape will change. We still have the final issue of Avengers: Armageddon to fully asses the impact of the event for the Marvel Universe. Marvel did reveal that David Colton’s Miracleman is the mysterious sixth member of the new Avengers team Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto have assembled post-Avengers: Armageddon.
While Miracleman’s immediate future as an Avenger is known there are a lot of questions around the character. Since his debut in 2025’s Captain America #1 it was shown that while David Colton has some similarities to Steve Rogers he isn’t just his clone. Speaking to the era that he grew up in David was shown to be a much more conflicted Captain America. And as we’ve seen with all characters that have been given a version of the Super Soldier Serum, it is something that amplifies all of the user’s traits, positive and negative.
This is where the big question around David Colton has to be. We have seen various instances in Captain America that he is prone to go into a Berserker Rage-like state when things turn south. This Berserker Rage-like state amplifies David’s belief that he is the only one that knows what’s right. It is a belief that even when he is not in this state that is a strong one. We’ve seen that in Avengers: Armageddon where his tunnel vision on destroying various weapons facilities caused him to not consider the response it would cause by world leaders.
With David now having the God-like powers of Miracleman there is no telling what he can become. Especially when you factor in the on top of the Miracleman powers David also has the Super Soldier Serum and an Arc Reactor implant. These things along with his personalities traits make David’s Miracleman something we can’t just say he is Marvel’s version of Superman. He may be the furthest thing away from becoming that even with similar power sets.
