Amazing Spider-Man 018-1

February 2023 Single Issue Comic Book Sales Rankings

It is time to check out the February 2023 single-issue comic book sales rankings. Things are getting murkier in terms of actual unit numbers. So, we will have to settle with going to ICv2 for their Top 200 sales rankings. It is not as good as actual unit numbers, but we have to work with what we get.

Keep in mind, that the Top 200 single-issue comic sales charts are based on orders tracked by the ComicHub system at local comic book shops selling American comics. This includes over 3,000 stores selling American comics worldwide. As always, it is important to remember that these rankings are also not actual sales. These rankings only represent the number of units ordered by local comic shops.

The Battle for the Top 10

  1. Amazing Spider-Man #19 (Marvel Comics)
  2. Batman #132 (DC Comics)
  3. Dark Web Finale #1 Dark Web (Marvel Comics)
  4. Daredevil #8 (Marvel Comics)
  5. Superman #1 (DC Comics)
  6. Batman & The Joker The Deadly Duo #4 (Of 7) (DC Comics)
  7. Venom #16 Dark Web (Marvel Comics
  8. Moon Knight #20 (Marvel Comics)
  9. Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #1 (Marvel Comics)
  10. Miles Morales Spider-Man #3 (Marvel Comics)

Marvel Comics dominated all publishers by putting seven titles in the Top 10. This was up from the six titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 10 in January 2023. However, year-over-year numbers were down from the nine titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 10 in February 2022.

Peter Parker remains the King of American comics as he beat Bruce Wayne for the number one spot for a second consecutive month. The Spider-Man franchise accounted for four of Marvel Comics’ seven titles in the Top 10. The other franchises in the Top 10 included Daredevil, X-Men, and Moon Knight. Again, I have to highlight Moon Knight’s stunning sustained success. We are now twenty issues into this Moon Knight title and it still manages to make the Top 10! Marvel Comics deserves so much credit for brilliantly reviving a moribund franchise like Moon Knight. DC Comics needs to figure out how to pull this off with some of its franchises.

DC Comics came in a very distant second place with three titles in the Top 10. This was the same as DC Comics did the Top 10 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up from the one title that DC Comics had in the Top 10 in February 2022.

Of course, two of DC Comics’ three titles were from the Batman franchise and starred Bruce Wayne. The only other DC Comics franchise in the Top 10 was Superman.

It was great to see Superman #1 cracking the Top 5 and this is a great debut for the new Superman title. However, DC Comics has to be disappointed that the brand new number one issue for the most iconic superhero of all time was unable to beat Daredevil #8 which is a vastly smaller franchise in its eighth issue. This shows how much work DC Comics has in front of them.

The Battle for the Top 25

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 11-25 range typically sell in the 65,000 to 50,000 unit range.

  1. Batman Beyond The White Knight #8 (Of 8) (DC Comics)
  2. Amazing Spider-Man #20 (Marvel Comics)
  3. X-Men #19 (Marvel Comics)
  4. Nightcrawlers #1 (Of 3) (Marvel Comics)
  5. Red Goblin #1 (Marvel Comics)
  6. Bloodline Daughter of Blade #1 (Marvel Comics)
  7. Scarlet Witch #2 (Marvel Comics)
  8. Spider-Man #5 (Marvel Comics)
  9. Hulk #12 (Marvel Comics)
  10. Fantastic Four #4 (Marvel Comics)
  11. Silver Surfer Ghost Light #1 (Marvel Comics)
  12. Ghost Rider #11 (Marvel Comics)
  13. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Last Ronin Lost Years #1 (IDW Publishing)
  14. Avengers #65 (Marvel Comics)
  15. Star Wars Darth Vader #31 (Marvel Comics)

Marvel Comics obliterated everyone by putting twenty titles in the Top 25. This was up from the sixteen titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 25 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics also had twenty titles in the Top 25 in February 2022.

Marvel Comics began pulling from a much more diverse selection of franchises with their Top 25 success. Spider-Man, X-Men, Daredevil, Moon Knight, Scarlet Witch, Fantastic Four, Blade, Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, and Avengers all contributed titles in the Top 25. This is the wide range of successful franchises that DC Comics can only dream about. This right here is one big reason why Marvel Comics continues to destroy DC Comics in the sales rankings every month.

I am thrilled to see that readers are still supporting Fantastic Four. This new FF title has been a joy to read and I am happy to see it continuing to stay in the Top 25.

I am also happy to see Ghost Rider continuing to enjoy amazing sustained success in the sales charts. We are now eleven issues into this new Ghost Rider title and it is still a Top 25 seller. This far exceeds my expectations. Readers clearly love what Marvel Comics is doing with this title.

DC Comics put an embarrassing four titles in the Top 25. This was down from the eight titles that DC Comics had in the Top 25 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down as DC Comics had five titles in the Top 25 in February 2022.

Of course, three of DC Comics’ four titles were from the Batman franchise and all three starred Bruce Wayne. The complete inability of DC Comics to generate any reader interest in any title outside of a Bruce Wayne title is just killing the publisher and their attempts to have any success in the Top 25.

IDW placed one title in the Top 25. Behold the power of the Turtles!

The Battle for the Top 50

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 26-50 range typically sell in the 49,000 to 30,000 unit range.

  1. Immoral X-Men #1 (Of 3) (Marvel Comics)
  2. Poison Ivy #9 (DC Comics)

  21. Mary Jane & Black Cat #3 (Marvel Comics)
  22. Nightwing #101 (DC Comics)
  23. Alien #6 (Marvel Comics)
  24. Spawn #338 (Image Comics)
  25. Saga #62 (Image Comics)

Marvel Comics stormed to first place by placing thirty-two titles in the Top 50. This was up from the thirty titles in the Top 50 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had thirty-two titles in the Top 50 in February 2022.

What is amazing is that the resolicitation for Amazing Spider-Man #18 almost cracked into the Top 25! That is insane! Amazing Spider-Man #18 came in the number 28 spot which is incredibly high for a resolication. Marvel Comics just cannot do anything wrong when it comes to Amazing Spider-Man. Again, I may not like Amazing Spider-Man at all, but the numbers do not lie. Readers continue to flock to Amazing Spider-Man in droves.

DC Comics limped into second place with thirteen titles in the Top 50. This was the same as what DC Comics did in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up from the eleven titles that DC Comics had in the Top 50 in February 2022.

Of course, seven of DC Comics’ thirteen titles were from the Batman franchise.

Image Comics took third place with four titles in the Top 50. This was up slightly from the three titles that Image Comics had in the Top 50 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down big from the eight titles that Image Comics had in the Top 50 in February 2022.

IDW placed one title in the Top 50.

The Battle for the Top 75

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 51-75 range typically sell in the 29,000 to 25,000 unit range.

  1. Blue Book #1 (Of 5) (Dark Horse Comics)
  2. Batman Superman World’s Finest #12 (DC Comics)
  3. Star Wars Sana Starros #1 (Marvel Comics)
  4. Saga #61 (Image Comics)

  23. Thor #30 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)
  24. She-Hulk #10 (Marvel Comics)
  25. I Hate Fairyland #4 (Image Comics)

Marvel Comics took first place with a monstrous forty-four titles in the Top 75. This was even better than the forty-three titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 75 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up from the forty-two titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 75 in February 2022.

DC Comics came in a very distant second place with nineteen titles in the Top 75. This was down from the twenty titles that DC Comics had in the Top 75 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down from the twenty-one titles that DC Comics had in the Top 75 in February 2022.

Of course, nine of DC Comics’ nineteen titles were from the Batman franchise.

Image Comics came in third place with seven titles in the Top 75. This was slightly better than the six titles that Image Comics had in the Top 75 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down from the ten titles that Image Comics had in the Top 75 in February 2022.

BOOM! Studios took fourth place with two titles in the Top 75. This was down from the three titles that BOOM! Studios had in the Top 75 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as BOOM! Studios had two titles in the Top 75 in February 2022.

IDW, Dark Horse Comics, and Dynamite Entertainment all placed one title apiece in the Top 75.

The Battle for the Top 100

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 76-100 range typically sell in the 24,000 to 18,000 unit range.

  1. Batman One Bad Day Catwoman #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics) (Resolicitation)
  2. Black Panther #14 (Marvel Comics)

  23. Avengers War Across Time #2 (Marvel Comics)
  24. The Flash #793 (One-Minute War) (DC Comics)
  25. Nightwing #100 (DC Comics) (Resolicitation)

Marvel Comics crushed all competitors en route to taking first place with fifty-eight titles in the Top 100. This was even better than the fifty-six titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 100 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up from the fifty-seven titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 100 in February 2022.

DC Comics came in a distant second place with twenty-eight titles in the Top 100. This was the same that DC Comics did in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up from the twenty-six titles that DC Comics had in the Top 100 in February 2022.

Naturally, fifteen of DC Comics’ twenty-eight titles were from the Batman franchise.

Image Comics took third place with eight titles in the Top 100. This was up slightly from the seven titles that Image Comics had in the Top 100 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down big from the fourteen titles that Image Comics had in the Top 100 in February 2022.

BOOM! Studios took fourth place with three titles in the Top 100. This was down from the six titles that BOOM! Studios put in the Top 100 in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up from the two titles that BOOM! Studios had in the Top 100 in February 2022.

IDW, Dark Horse Comics, and Dynamite Entertainment all placed one title apiece in the Top 100.

Battle of the Franchises

The battle for the franchises was won by the Spider-Man franchise which had four titles in the Top 10, seven titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50.

The Batman franchise came in second place with two titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50.

The X-Men franchise came in third place with one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50.

The Avengers franchise came in fourth place with zero titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50.

The Star Wars franchise came in fifth place with zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50.

Four of the Top 5 franchises came from Marvel Comics. No surprise there.

166 Icon Vs Hardware #1 (Of 5) (DC Comics)

Unranked: Avengers: End Times – Marvel Tales #1 (Marvel Comics)

February 2023 delivered plenty of debut issues from Marvel Comics and DC Comics. We will get to most of these debut issues in the different franchise sections below. However, I wanted to touch on a couple of these issues now.

Marvel Comics has to be thrilled with the Red Goblin #1 debuting at the number 15 spot. The Spider-Man franchise is unstoppable at the moment.

Bloodline Daughter of Blade #1 had a great debut taking the number 16 spot. This was much better than I anticipated. Marvel Comics must be happy. There is no doubt that Blade is popular. But, I was unsure what kind of interest Bloodline would generate among fans. It is going to be interesting to see if the Blade fans that jumped on this debut issue stick around for the subsequent issues. I am not too bullish on Bloodline Daughter of Blade. The next two months are going to be pivotal for gauging the sustained success of this five-issue mini-series.

Silver Surfer Ghost Light #1 had a solid debut taking the number 21 spot. Again, this was higher than I anticipated. This is another mini-series that I am not bullish on at all. John Jennings is the writer of this title. Jennings is a novelist and a professor. Non-comic book writers traditionally struggle in the sales charts. It will be interesting to see how many readers Silver Surfer Ghost Light retains over the next few issues.

Static Shadows of Dakota #1 had a dismal debut coming in outside of the Top 50 and down at the number 65 spot. This generally indicates a title that is going to rapidly drop out of the Top 100 in the next issue or two.

Punisher War Journal Base #1 totally crashed and burned by failing to even get into the Top 150 as it came in at the number 156 spot. Brutal.

Big Events

3 Dark Web Finale #1 Dark Web (Marvel Comics)

7 Venom #16 Dark Web (Marvel Comics)

9 Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #1 (Sins of Sinister tie-in issue) (Marvel Comics)

14 Nightcrawlers #1 (Of 3) (Sins of Sinister tie-in issue) (Marvel Comics)

26 Immoral X-Men #1 (Of 3) (Sins of Sinister tie-in issue) (Marvel Comics)

29 Lazarus Planet Omega #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)

34 Lazarus Planet Legends Reborn #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)

38 Lazarus Planet Next Evolution #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)

44 Lazarus Planet Dark Fate #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)

143 Venom #15 Dark Web (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

163 Monkey Prince #11 (Of 12) (Lazarus Planet) (DC Comics)

182 Lazarus Planet We Once Were Gods #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics) (Resolicitation)

Dark Web ended with a bang by taking the number 3 spot and the number 7 spot. Marvel Comics has to be pleased with the sales success of Dark Web.

Marvel Comics also appears to have another hit on its hands with the Sins of Sinister big event. All of the Sins of Sinister tie-in issues did very well. In fact, Marvel Comics almost got all three into the Top 25! At any rate, getting two Sins of Sinister titles into the Top 15 and one more at the number 26 spot is a fantastic result for this new big event story.

Lazarus Planet continues to be a solid seller for DC Comics. The four Lazarus Planet one-shots all made it into the Top 50. That is a win for the chronically struggling DC Comics. To be fair, Sins of Sinister totally dusted Lazarus Planet. But, I still think that getting all the Lazarus Planet one-shots into the Top 50 should be considered a win for DC Comics.

Star Wars Franchise

25 Star Wars Darth Vader #31 (Marvel Comics)

37 Star Wars Hidden Empire #3 (Marvel Comics)

40 Star Wars High Republic #5 (Marvel Comics)

41 Star Wars #31 (Marvel Comics)

53 Star Wars Sana Starros #1 (Marvel Comics)

83 Star Wars Yoda #4 (Marvel Comics)

88 Star Wars Bounty Hunters #31 (Marvel Comics)

123 Star Wars Yoda #3 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

125 Star Wars High Republic Blade #2 (Of 4) (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

145 Star Wars Doctor Aphra #29 (Marvel Comics)

170 Star Wars Doctor Aphra #28 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

183 Star Wars The Nameless Terror #1 (Of 4) (Dark Horse Comics)

198 Star Wars Darth Vader #30 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

The Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50. This was exactly the same as in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down in the Top 10 and Top 25 and flat in the Top 50 as the Star Wars franchise had one title in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50.

The Star Wars franchise continues to underperform as it struggles to have any success in the Top 25. The sales numbers for Star Wars Darth Vader, Star Wars Hidden Empire, Star Wars High republic, and Star Wars are all rather stable. So, at least Marvel Comics has that going for them.

Star Wars Sans Starros #1 had a disappointing debut as it failed to crack the Top 50 and came in at the number 53 spot. This does not surprise me. Star Wars San Starros is written by Justina Ireland. Ireland is a YA novelist who has also written YA novels for Lucasfilm Press.

As we have seen over and over, YA novelists have failed to find any success in the sales rankings. Therefore, I was not expecting anything different with Star Wars Sans Starros #1. With such a low debut number, I would expect that this five-issue mini-series is going to conclude well outside of the Top 100.

As usual, Star Wars Doctor Aphra remains the lowest-selling Marvel Comics Star Wars title. This title seems doomed to continue to sell outside of the Top 150.

Spider-Man Franchise

1 Amazing Spider-Man #19

3 Dark Web Finale #1 Dark Web

7 Venom #16 Dark Web

10 Miles Morales Spider-Man #3

12 Amazing Spider-Man #20

15 Red Goblin #1

18 Spider-Man #5

28 Amazing Spider-Man #18 Dark Web (Resolicitation)

46 Mary Jane & Black Cat #3

62 Gold Goblin #4

66 Amazing Spider-Man #129 Facsimile Edition

70 Spider-Man Lost Hunt #4 (Of 5)

78 Amazing Spider-Man #17 (Resolicitation)

105 Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5

113 Carnage #10

134 Miles Morales Spider-Man #1(Resolicitation)

143 Venom #15 Dark Web (Resolicitation)

167 Miles Morales Spider-Man #2 (Resolicitation)

191 Dark Web #1 (Resolicitation)

197 Amazing Spider-Man #16 (Resolicitation)

Unranked: Peter Parker & Miles Morales – Spider-Men: Double Trouble #4

The Spider-Man franchise had four titles in the Top 10, seven titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50. This was better in the Top 10 and Top 25, but flat in the Top 50 than in January 2023 when the Spider-Man franchise had three titles in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up as the Spider-Man franchise had three titles in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50 in February 2022.

Peter Parker remains the straw that stirs the drink. Amazing Spider-Man continues to dominate the sales rankings. It is rather incredible how much readers love this title.

Venom also continues to be a sales beast as Venom #16 took the number 7 spot. It is impressive that over two years into this Venom title that it is still a Top 10 seller. Fans cannot get enough of this character.

Miles Morales continues to find massive success with his new title. Normally, restarting a title that is not selling well with a brand new #1 issue does not lead to much sales success. See Captain Marvel as a classic example of that. Well, it looks like Marvel Comics may be onto something with this newly restarted Miles Morales title.

Miles Morales Spider-Man #3 scored the number 10 spot. This is flat-out impressive. I will admit that I did not see this coming. After all, Miles has had his title restarted before and always saw his sales numbers quickly decline. The fact that Miles Morales Spider-Man is still in the Top 10 by the third issue is a wonderful sign that Marvel Comics may have another hit on its hands.

Red Goblin #1 had an excellent debut coming in at the number 15 spot. It seems that the Spider-Man franchise can simply do no wrong at the moment! Red Goblin seemed like a spin-off of a spin-off so I had zero interest in this title. However, there is no doubt that many fans were extremely excited about this issue. It will be interesting to see how this title does over the next few months.

Mary Jane & Black Cat continues to plummet in the sales rankings. The first issue came in at the number 17 spot. The second issue fell to the number 30 spot. Now, Mary Jane & Black Cat #3 dropped down to the number 46 spot. It looks like this five-issue mini-series is not going to finish inside of the Top 50.

Gold Goblin #4 fell down from the number 34 spot to the number 62 spot. The big question will be if this five-issue mini-series can conclude inside of the Top 75.

Carnage continues to struggle as Carnage #10 drops from the number 61 spot all the way out of the Top 100 and down to the number 113 spot. This is a rough showing for Carnage. We will know next month if this is just an odd blip in the sales rankings or a sign of a more serious problem for the title.

X-Men Franchise

9 Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #1

13 X-Men #19

14 Nightcrawlers #1 (Of 3)

26 Immoral X-Men #1 (Of 3)

30 Wolverine #30

31 X-Force #37

32 Sins of Sinister #1 (Resolicitation)

61 Bishop War College #1

69 Deadpool #4

71 Legion of X #10

80 Marauders #11

81 X-Treme X-Men #3 (Of 5)

87 Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #1

119 X-Men Legends #6

138 Sabretooth & the Exiles #4 (Of 5)

155 Immortal X-Men #10 (Resolicitation)

174 X-Men #18 (Resolicitation)

190 X-Terminators #5 (Resolicitation)

196 Deadpool #3 (Resolicitation)

The X-Men franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50. This was worse than January 2023 when the X-Men franchise had one title in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were also down as the X-Men franchise had one title in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and ten titles in the Top 50 in February 2022.

Sales for the various X-Men titles in Wolverine, X-Force, and Legion of X continue to be stable month-to-month with little variation in their rankings.

Bishop War College #1 had a bad debut failing to make the Top 50 and coming in at the number 61 spot. This is a title written by J. Holtham who is a TV scriptwriter. So, I was not expecting much sales success for a comic written by a non-comic book writer. Such a low debut number indicates that Bishop War College will probably drop out of the Top 100 within the next two issues.

Marauders #11 dropped like a rock from the number 45 spot down to the number 80 spot. Again, this might be a momentary blip in the sales rankings for Marauders. Let’s check in next month and see if Marauders bounces back up to its usual spot between numbers 45-65.

Deadpool continues to crash and burn in the sales rankings in spectacular fashion. Deadpool #1 debuted at the number 6 spot. Deadpool #4 has plummeted all the way out of the Top 50 and down to the number 69 spot. That is a hell of a drop in an alarmingly quick fashion for such an immensely popular character in Deadpool. Again, I am not that surprised since Alyssa Wong has never had any sales success and seemed like an odd fit for a Deadpool title.

Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #1 had a horrendous debut failing to even make the Top 75 and coming in at the number 87 spot. Absolutely nobody should be surprised by this fact. Tini Howard has not had any sales success and her Excalibur title crashed and burned in the sales rankings in a quick fashion. Howard’s mantle-swapped version of Betsy Braddock has failed to generate any fan interest. I did not think that rolling out a new comic with a #1 on the cover was going to change anything at all. It is a safe bet that Betsy Braddock Captain Britain will drop out of the Top 100 with just its second issue. At this point, I think it is obvious that this dog won’t hunt.

Avengers Franchise

Unranked: Avengers: End Times – Marvel Tales #1

The Avengers franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50. This was worse than January 2023 when the Avengers franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50. On the other hand, year-over-year numbers were up as the Avengers franchise had one title in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50 in February 2022.

Scarlet Witch #2 dropped from the number 3 spot down to the number 17 spot. That is actually not that big of a drop between the first and second issues! Marvel Comics should be pleased by this sales ranking for Scarlet Witch. This is a much hotter start for Scarlet Witch than I was expecting.

The next few months are going to be critical for Scarlet Witch. This is when we are going to learn if Marvel Comics has a title that is going to remain a consistent Top 25 or Top 50 title or if Scarlet Witch is going to continue to slide down the rankings like She-Hulk.

The Hulk continues to be a constant Top 25 seller. Reader support remains very strong for this title.

Avengers continues to find new life as Avengers #65 took the number 24 spot. Yeah, this was down from the number 19 spot in January 2023. But, that is not much of a difference, and still far better than the Avengers had been selling. Marvel Comics should be happy with Avengers selling well as Jason Aaron’s run concludes and the new creative team prepares to take over.

Thor has cooled off a bit. This title used to be a Top 10 to Top 25 title every month. However, Thor #31 came in at the number 35 spot. This is almost the same as in January 2023 when Thor #30 took the number 37 spot. However, it should be noted that the resolicitation for Thor #30 came in at the number 73 spot which is very high for a resoclitation of an issue.

Invincible Iron Man has appeared to find its equilibrium in the sales rankings as Invincible Iron Man #3 took the number 42 spot which was the exact same spot that Invincible Iron Man #2 took in January 2023. I do not get the appeal of this title, but clearly, a solid portion of readers like what Marvel Comics is delivering with this title. Marvel Comics would certainly be pleased if Iron Man turns out to be a consistent Top 50 title every month.

Captain America Sentinel of Liberty #9 took the number 57 spot. This is close to the number 53 spot that this title took in January 2023. Steve Rogers’ title appears to have found its happy place in the sales rankings. I am sure that Marvel Comics would rather see Captain America in the Top 50 or higher every month. But, coming in between 50-60 every month would not be the worst thing considering that I do not find this title to be that well-written in the first place.

Sam Wilson’s title continues to struggle. Captain America Symbol of Truth #10 barely made it into the Top 100 by taking the number 96 spot. This was down from the number 89 spot that Sam Wilson took in January 2023. I continue to question Marvel Comics’ logic in having two Captain Americas operating at the same time. To this point, this approach has not led to any sales success at all. It also appears to not be helping Sam Wilson’s character, either. Personally, I would still go with a Sam Wilson Falcon title and allow Sam to blaze his own trail and be his own man.

Captain Marvel continues to do what Captain Marvel does which is to barely make it into the Top 100. In January 2023, Captain Marvel #45 took the number 91 spot. In February 2023, Captain Marvel #46 took…the number 91 spot. It is at least consistent.

Wasp dropped in the sales rankings like a shot duck. Wasp #2 fell from the number 65 spot right out of the Top 100 and down to the number 117 spot. If people continue to wonder why Marvel Comics does not invest much in Janet Van Dyne then here is your proof. There just is not any real fan interest in a Wasp solo title.

Monica Rambeau Photon continues to plummet down the sales rankings in spectacular fashion. Monica Rambeau Photon #3 fell from the number 108 spot down to the number 133 spot. At this point, I am not sure that this five-issue mini-series will conclude in the Top 150. This is a really disappointing result for Monica Rambeau. It is unfortunate that Marvel Comics’ attempt to deliver Monica as her own unique character has not generated any fan interest at all.

Unranked: GCPD: The Blue Wall #5

Unranked: The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #5

Unranked: Batman/Spawn: Unplugged #1 (Resolicitation)

The Batman franchise had two titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50. This was much worse than January 2023 when the Batman franchise had three titles in the Top 10, six titles in the Top 25, and ten titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were also down as the Batman franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50.

The Batman franchise did not have a great month in February 2023 as it performed much worse than it did in January 2023. One big difference was Nightwing’s complete collapse in the sales rankings. Nightwing was a title that usually sold between the number 45-55 spots. However, with Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths ending it appeared that Dick Grayson was about to ascend to another level.

In November 2023, Nightwing #98 took the number 24 spot. In December 2023, Nightwing #99 took the number 23 spot. In January 2023, Nightwing #100 took the number 4 spot. It seemed like DC Comics had finally made one of their legacy characters into a dominant sales beast and an integral part of the DCU. It looked like readers were buying in.

However, in February 2023, Nightwing #101 fell all the way down to the number 47 spot. Right back to where we normally find Dick Grayson. This has to be incredibly disappointing to DC Comics that all the readers who were attracted to Nightwing over the past few months were not enticed or convinced to stay with this title.

Poison Ivy had a fantastic rebound from its number 48 spot in January 2023. Poison Ivy #9 bounced back up to the number 27 spot. This is a positive sign for this young title that it might end up being a consistent Top 50 title. I am sure DC Comics would be happy if that happened with Poison Ivy.

Joker The Man Who Stopped Laughing #5 took the number 55 spot. It seems that this title has found its happy space in the sales rankings as it has settled into that 50-59 range.

Batman Superman World’s Finest had it’s worst showing ever in the sales rankings. This is a title that normally slots in the Top 25. Batman Superman World’s Finest #12 plummeted down to the number 52 spot. This title has been an excellent read and February 2023 may just be an aberration. Let’s see if Batman Superman World’s Finest bounces back up to its normal place in the sales rankings next month.

Catwoman #52 managed to bounce back up into the Top 100 by taking the number 95 spot. This is still too low for a character like Catwoman. But, it is an improvement over last month.

Batgirls #15 dropped down to the number 129 spot. This title continues to struggle to attract readers. I am not sure why DC Comics is allowing Becky Cloonan and Michale Conrad to stay on this title. Cloonan and Conrad have yet to have any sales success at all for DC Comics. This is a title that desperately needs a shakeup with the creative team.

Harley Quinn continues to be terribly mismanaged by DC Comics. Harley Quinn is an immensely popular character who should absolutely be in the Top 50 every single month. DC’s Harley Quinn Romances #1 came in outside of the Top 100 at the number 114 spot. Harley Quinn The Animated Series Legion of Bats #5 failed to even make the Top 150 as it came in all the way down at the number 172 spot.

These sales rankings for Harley Quinn are embarrassing and unacceptable for a character like Harley Quinn. DC Comics needs to think long and hard about how they handle and present Harley Quinn and the creative teams that they hire for her titles. Because the current direction is obviously not working.

I Am Batman remains the worst-selling ongoing Batman franchise title. I Am Batman #18 barely made the Top 150 by taking the number 148 spot. It is amazing that DC Comics still bothers to publish this title.

Superman Franchise

5 Superman #1

52 Batman Superman World’s Finest #12

86 Action Comics #1051 (Resolicitation)

144 Superman Space Age #3 (Of 3)

187 Batman Superman World’s Finest #11 (Resolicitation)

The Superman franchise had one title in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50. This was better at the top but worse at the bottom than January 2023 when the Superman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50. However, year-over-year numbers were up as the Superman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50.

DC Comics desperately needs this new direction for the Superman franchise to work out. Superman #1 definitely had a strong debut coming in at the number 5 spot. The resolicitation for Action Comics #1051 took the number 86 spot. That is pretty high for a resoliciation of an issue. There is enough there for DC Comics to cross their fingers and hope that they have a successful direction in hand for the Superman franchise.

Wonder Woman Franchise

149 Wonder Woman #796

182 Lazarus Planet We Once Were Gods #1 (One-Shot) (Resolicitation)

The Wonder Woman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. This was the same as in January 2023 when the Wonder Woman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were also the same as the Wonder Woman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50.

There is nothing to talk about the Wonder Woman franchise until Tom King and Daniel Sampere take over the franchise. Personally, I do not think that Tom King is the right man for the job. But, you never know how readers are going to respond to King’s new direction for Wonder Woman. At any rate, what we do know is that big changes are needed because the Wonder Woman franchise has been a total sales failure for a long time.

Justice League Franchise

56 The Flash #792 (One-Minute War)

63 The Flash One-Minute War Special #1 (One-Shot)

99 The Flash #793 (One-Minute War)

158 Black Adam #8 (Of 12)

The Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. This was the same as January 2023 when the Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were also the same as the Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50.

The One-Minute War has not been a monster seller, but it has been selling better than The Flash had been selling prior to the One-Minute War. So, it has at least increased the sales some. At this point, DC Comics needs to take any small wins that come its way.

Black Adam continues to be a title that has very little reader appeal as it drops out of the Top 150. This title was a huge swing and a miss by DC Comics’ editorial staff. It is going to be a struggle for this title to even remain ranked in the Top 200 by the conclusion of this limited series.

Mantle Swap Titles

4 Daredevil #8 (Marvel Comics)

10 Miles Morales Spider-Man #3 (Marvel Comics)

87 Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #1 (Marvel Comics)

91 Captain Marvel #46 (Marvel Comics)

96 Captain America Symbol of Truth #10 (Marvel Comics)

134 Miles Morales Spider-Man #1 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

148 I Am Batman #18 (DC Comics)

158 Black Adam #8 (Of 12) (DC Comics)

167 Miles Morales Spider-Man #2 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

181 Daredevil #7 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

Unranked: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #3 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: GCPD: The Blue Wall #5 (DC Comics)

There were two mantle swap titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and two titles in the Top 50. This was the same as in January 2023.

Daredevil continues to be the cream of the crop of the mantle swap titles. This is probably because Daredevil is not a full-blown mantle swap title as Matt Murdock is still Daredevil even though Electra is also masquerading as Daredevil at the same time. Again, I prefer Electra as her own woman with her own identity. But, readers clearly love this title. There is no denying this fact at all.

Miles Morales is the only other successful mantle swap title. However, Miles Morales is also not a full-blown mantle swap title as Peter Parker is still the main Spider-Man of the 616 Universe.

The rest of the mantle swap titles are sales failures. I do not see that changing anytime soon.

Legacy Character Titles

16 Bloodline Daughter of Blade #1 (Marvel Comics)

47 Nightwing #101 (DC Comics)

56 The Flash #792 (One-Minute War) (DC Comics)

63 The Flash One-Minute War Special #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)

99 The Flash #793 (One-Minute War) (DC Comics)

100 Nightwing #100 (DC Comics) (Resolicitation)

129 Batgirls #15 (DC Comics)

160 Justice Society of America #2 (DC Comics) (Resolicitation)

185 Titans United Bloodpact #6 (Of 6) (DC Comics)

There were zero legacy characters in the Top 10, one in the Top 25, and two in the Top 50. This was worse at the top and slightly better at the bottom than January 2023 when there was one legacy character in the Top 10, one in the Top 25, and one in the Top 50.

The collapse of Nightwing really dealt a blow to the Legacy Character titles in February 2023. Still, Dick Grayson and Wally West remain the class of the Legacy Character category.

Titans United Bloodpact #6 came in the number 185 spot. That was a disappointing ranking for the conclusion of this mini-series. DC Comics has a tough road ahead of them to reconstruct the Titans into a franchise that is capable of being a Top 50 seller each and every month. However, this should absolutely be the goal for DC Comics with the upcoming Titans title. There is no reason that Titans should not be a strong-selling title.

The Top Female Lead Titles

9 Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #1 (Marvel Comics)

16 Bloodline Daughter of Blade #1 (Marvel Comics)

17 Scarlet Witch #2 (Marvel Comics)

27 Poison Ivy #9 (DC Comics)

46 Mary Jane & Black Cat #3 (Marvel Comics)

58 Demon Wars Down in Flames #1 (Marvel Comics)

74 She-Hulk #10 (Marvel Comics)

87 Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #1 (Marvel Comics)

133 Monica Rambeau Photon #3 (Marvel Comics)

141 Scarlet Witch #1 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

150 Harley Quinn #26 (DC Comics) (Resolicitation)

170 Star Wars Doctor Aphra #28 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

172 Harley Quinn The Animated Series Legion of Bats #5 (Of 6) (DC Comics)

179 Catwoman #51 (DC Comics) (Resolicitation)

Unranked: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #3 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: GCPD: The Blue Wall #5 (DC Comics)

There was one female lead title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50. This was better than January 2023 when there was one female lead title in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were also up as there were zero female lead titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50.

Marvel Comics cleaned DC Comics’ clock in the Female Lead Category. Marvel Comics had three female lead titles in the Top 25. DC Comics had zero. Marvel Comics had five female lead titles in the Top 75. DC Comics had one. Marvel Comics had eight female lead titles in the Top 100. DC Comics only had two.

This should be unacceptable for DC Comics given their amazing roster of female superheroes. DC Comics needs to figure out what they are doing wrong with their female lead titles and get to fixing them ASAP.

The Top Minority Lead Titles

9 Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #1 (Marvel Comics)

10 Miles Morales Spider-Man #3 (Marvel Comics)

16 Bloodline Daughter of Blade #1 (Marvel Comics)

53 Star Wars Sana Starros #1 (Marvel Comics)

58 Demon Wars Down in Flames #1 (Marvel Comics)

61 Bishop War College #1 (Marvel Comics)

65 Static Shadows of Dakota #1 (Of 6) (DC Comics)

163 Monkey Prince #11 (Of 12) (Lazarus Planet) (DC Comics)

166 Icon vs Hardware #1 (Of 5) (DC Comics)

167 Miles Morales Spider-Man #2 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

170 Star Wars Doctor Aphra #28 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

Unranked: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #3 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: GCPD: The Blue Wall #5 (DC Comics)

Unranked: Tiger Division #4 (Marvel Comics)

There were two minority lead titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50. This was better than January 2023 when there was one minority lead title in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up at the top but flat at the bottom as there were zero minority lead titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50.

Let’s take a look at the diversity of representation among the Minority Lead Category. Eighteen of the titles starred Black lead characters. Four of the titles starred Asian characters. One title starred a Hispanic character. No other groups were represented. Both Marvel Comics and DC Comics need to improve the diversity of representation in this category.

Marvel Comics crushed DC Comics in the Minority Lead Category. Marvel Comics had three minority lead titles in the Top 50. DC Comics had zero. Marvel Comics had eight minority lead titles in the Top 100. DC Comics had one. DC Comics should be absolutely embarrassed about this. There is no reason for DC Comics to be getting destroyed in this category by such a large margin.

Not even Lazarus Planet can pull Monkey King out of the depths of the sales rankings as Monkey Prince #11 came in the number 163 spot.

Icon vs Hardware #1 had a terrible debut failing to even make the Top 150 and coming in at the number 166 spot. Milestone Comics normally do not sell well, but this is lower than I anticipated. It looks like Icon vs. Hardware has a good chance of concluding its mini-series unranked.

DC Power: A Celebration #1 is a one-shot anthology starring black characters delivered by black artists and writers. This title had a bad debut not even coming close to the Top 100 by coming in at the number 128 spot.

Marvel’s answer to DC’s Black History Month anthology was Marvel’s Voices Wakanda Forever #1 which sold worse by coming in at the number 132 spot. Again, this is not much of a surprise since Marvel Comics’ Marvel’s Voices one-shots have cooled off considerably over the past year.

Dead Titles Walking

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, titles outside of the Top 100 are usually selling under the 18,000 unit sales mark. These are the Marvel Comics and DC Comics titles that are dead titles walking.

Marvel Comics

105 Deadly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5

110 Planet Hulk Worldbreaker #4

Unranked: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #3

Unranked: Tiger Division #4

Unranked: Avengers: End Times – Marvel Tales #1

Unranked: Peter Parker & Miles Morales – Spider-Men: Double Trouble #4

Marvel Comics had twenty-two dead titles walking out of their seventy-six new titles in February 2023. This means that 29% of Marvel Comics’ new titles in February 2023 were dead titles walking. This was down from the twenty-four dead titles walking that Marvel Comics had in January 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics only had ten dead titles walking in February 2022.

DC Comics

104 Batman The Adventures Continue Season 3 #2 (Of 7)

GCPD: The Blue Wall #5

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #120

The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #5

Batman/Spawn: Unplugged #1

DC Comics had nineteen dead titles walking out of DC Comics’ forty-two new titles in February 2023. This means that 45% of the New DC Comics’ titles in February 2023 were dead titles walking. This is down from the twenty-seven dead titles walking that DC Comics had in January 2023 which comprised 49% of DC Comics’ new titles. Year-over-year numbers were also down as DC Comics had twenty-six dead titles walking in February 2022.

The only writers with multiple dead titles walking in February 2023 were Becky Cloonan, Michael Conrad, and John Ridley. All three writers had two dead titles walking apiece.

All right, that is it for February 2023! Will Marvel Comics continue its domination of the Top 200 in March 2023? We will find out. Until then, everyone stay safe and be good!
