It appears that we have a typical size shipment of comic books headed to the Bunker today. We are getting a total of 12 titles today. This week is perfectly split 50/50 between DC and Marvel.

Which DC comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Honestly? None. This is a weak selection of titles that DC is offering up this week. I guess if I absolutely had to choose a title I’d go with Countdown to Final Crisis #25. I feel that since we are now on the back half of this series that by default Dini has to pick up the pace and start delivering good reads if DC expects readers to get excited over their huge Final Crisis event.

Which DC comic book am I least looking forward to reading? That would be Superman #670. I have found this title to be such a disappointing read each and every month that I have stopped even bothering to post reviews for Superman. And what stuns me the most is that Kurt Busiek is the writer on this title. I have huge respect for Busiek’s talents and have enjoyed his work in the past. However, Busiek has managed nothing more than a terribly pedestrian read on Superman. It certainly pales in comparison to what Johns has done over on Action Comics.

Which Marvel comic book am I most looking forward to reading? Tough choice. We have several great issues headed our way from the House of Ideas. Immortal Iron Fist #10 is sure to be an excellent read. Brubaker and Fraction have amazed me with how they have taken a C-list 1970’s character like Iron Fist and re-imagine him into a complex and intriguing characters for the 2000’s. It is a shame that Iron Fist is getting such poor sales numbers. The quality of writing on Iron Fist is vastly superior to many of the titles that are higher up on the sales charts.

Uncanny X-Men #492 should be a quality read since it continues the beginning of the Messiah Complex story arc. Brubaker whet my appetite with the Messiah Complex One Shot and I expect him to deliver a strong issue this week.

Having said all that, I’m going to have to go with Astonishing X-Men #23. Whedon is serving up the penultimate issue of this story arc this week. Astonishing X-Men has been hands down the best X-Men title on the market. It absolutely crushes X-Men and it even tops Brubaker’s Uncanny X-Men. I honestly haven’t enjoyed an X-Men comic book as much as Astonishing X-Men since Claremont left Uncanny X-Men back in 1991.

Which Marvel comic book am I least looking forward to reading? You know, surprisingly enough, none. Marvel is delivering a selection of quality reads this week. This is highly unusual.

I’ll try my best to start posting reviews as soon as possible. I hope everyone enjoys their new comic books for this week.

  1. I got Astonishing (I’m really struggling to care at this point, despite the high quality), Uncanny (Brubaker’s best yet, in my opinion), New Avengers: Illuminati (Woah, as Mr. Reeves would say), and Ms. Marvel (another fun installment).
