January 2024 Single Issue Comic Book Sales Rankings

It is time to check out the January 2024 single-issue comic book sales rankings. Things are getting murkier in terms of actual unit numbers. So, we will have to settle with going to ICv2 for their Top 200 sales rankings. It is not as good as actual unit numbers, but we have to work with what we get.

Keep in mind, that the Top 200 single-issue comic sales charts are based on orders tracked by the ComicHub system at local comic book shops selling American comics. This includes over 3,000 stores selling American comics worldwide. As always, it is important to remember that these rankings are also not actual sales. These rankings only represent the number of units ordered by local comic shops.

You can check out the Top 50 for January 2024 for free or opt for a pro membership and get the Top 200 for January 2024 over on ICv2 and then come back here for a detailed analysis of the January 2024 sales rankings!

January 2024 Top 200 Single Issue Comic Rankings

The Battle for the Top 10

Marvel Comics placed six comics in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were up from the five comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 10 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics also had six comics in the Top 10 in January 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as Marvel Comics had eight comics in the Top 10 in January 2022.

Marvel Comics’ Top 10 success was powered by the Spider-Man franchise, X-Men franchise. Once again, Peter Parker is the undisputed champion of superhero comic books. Peter scored the overall number 1 spot as well as two issues in the Top 3 and three issues in the Top 10. No other character can even come close to Peter Parker when it comes to moving units.

While Marvel Comics is still beating DC Comics soundly in the Top 10, it is interesting to note that Marvel Comics has declined in the Top 10 compared to two years ago. Image Comics is responsible for Marvel Comics’ Top 10 decline.

Image Comics placed three comics in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were up from the one comic that Image Comics had in the Top 10 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had zero comics in the Top 10 in January 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Image Comics had one comic in the Top 10 in January 2022.

Two of Image Comics’ three comics were from the Hasbro license. One was the Ghost Machine one-shot. This incredible Top 10 success for Image Comics is rather unusual. This is a testament to Image Comics’ brilliant decision to snag the Hasbro licenses and then do the opposite of what IDW Publishing was doing with the Hasbro properties.

Also, this Top 10 showing highlighted the massive excitement over Image Comics’ newest imprint, Ghost Machine. From what I understand, Ghost Machine is going to be its own imprint under the Image Comics banner much like Skybound. At any rate, Ghost Machine already boats more high-end talent than Marvel Comics and DC Comics currently possess combined. I am optimistic that Ghost Machine is going to deliver some fantastic titles.

DC Comics placed one comic in the Top 10. Month-over-month sales were down from the four comics that DC Comics had in the Top 10 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down as DC Comics had three comics in the Top 10 in January 2023. Numbers were flat from two years ago as DC Comics had one comic in the Top 10 in January 2022.

Wow. Image Comics beat DC Comics in the Top 10. What is DC Comics even doing these days? DC Comics is like that kid on your Little League baseball team that was sitting on in right field with their back to the game and picking daisies while everyone else was engaged in the game. I have to wonder if DC Comics has any editors left who actually care about having any type of sales success.

The fact that DC Comics sold the same amount of issues in the Top 10 as they did two years ago when we all thought DC Comics was dead in the water is awful. The Dawn of DC has utterly failed and I am not sure what DC Comics can do other than a full house cleaning.

To no surprise, DC Comics’ only title in the Top 10 was Batman #141.

The Battle for the Top 25

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 11-25 range typically sell in the 65,000 to 50,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed sixteen comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were up from the fifteen comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 25 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics also had sixteen comics in the Top 25 in January 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as Marvel Comics had eighteen comics in the Top 25 in January 2022.

Vengeance of the Moon Knight #1 debuted at the number 11 spot. It looks like there was high interest in Jed MacKay’s mantle swap title. The mystery over the new Moon Knight might prove to be a popular hook. We shall see.

Daredevil #5 dipped from the number 14 spot to the number 16 spot. This title remains a lock for the Top 25 every month.

DC Comics placed six comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were down from the eight comics that DC Comics had in the Top 25 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down as DC Comics had eight comics in the Top 25 in January 2023. Numbers were slightly up from two years ago as DC Comics had five comics in the Top 25 in January 2022.

It was the Big Three leading the way for DC Comics in the Top 25. Two titles came from the Batman franchise, two titles came from the Superman franchise, and one title came from the Wonder Woman franchise. The sixth title was a Justice League title also starring the Big Three.

The positive news for DC Comics is that they at least had their Big Three in the Top 25. This was not happening two years ago when we had Jon Kent as mantle swap Superman and Wonder Woman had been shelved in favor of Yara Flor. So, good job for DC Comics making a move to grab the low-hanging fruit to boost sales for Superman and Wonder Woman. Yeah, it took no brains at all to make these moves, but DC Comics has shown a penchant for lacking brains in many of their editorial decisions.

The bad news for DC Comics is that they have been unable to manufacture any of their other characters outside of the Big 3 into Top 25 titles. In two years, Dawn of DC has only been able to increase sales by a single title in the Top 25.

Image Comics placed three comics in the Top 25. Month-over-month sales were up from the two comics that Image Comics had in the Top 25 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had zero comics in the Top 25 in January 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Image Comics had two comics in the Top 25 in January 2022.

Two of Image Comics’ three titles came from the lucrative Hasbro license. The other title was from Ghost Machine. Image Comics has smartly moved to increase its titles that have mass appeal to balance out all of its low-selling niche titles.

The Battle for the Top 50

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 26-50 range typically sell in the 49,000 to 30,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed thirty-three comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the twenty-eight comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 50 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had thirty comics in the Top 50 in January 2023. Numbers were flat compared to two years ago as Marvel Comics also had thirty-three comics in the Top 50 in January 2022.

The fact that Marvel Comics is flat in the Top 50 compared to two years ago is not great. Much of the lack of growth for Marvel Comics is that Image Comics has outmaneuvered them with the Hasbro license.

Fantastic Four #15 dipped from the number 25 spot to the number 30 spot. This is exactly where we usually find the Fantastic Four. This title tends to dip in and out of the Top 25. Fantastic Four #16 then dropped to the number 47 spot. That is a strong number and not that much of a drop considering this title cranked out two issues in one month. That always leads to the second issue having a lower sales ranking.

Doctor Strange climbed up from the number 50 spot to the number 44 spot. This is the second straight month that Doctor Strange has climbed up in the rankings.

G.O.D.S. #4 dipped from the number 28 spot to the number 33 spot. It appears that G.O.D.S. has found its happy space in the rankings and should remain a solid Top 50 seller.

DC Comics placed ten comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were down by a wide margin from the eighteen comics that DC Comics had in the Top 50 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had thirteen comics in the Top 50 in January 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as DC Comics had eleven comics in the Top 50 in January 2022.

Again, the disappointment over the performance of the Dawn of DC initiative continues. The fact that DC Comics only moved one more issue into the Top 50 than it did two years ago is incredibly disappointing.

Image Comics placed six comics in the Top 50. Month-over-month sales were up from the three comics that Image Comics had in the Top 50 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had three comics in the Top 50 in January 2023. Numbers were flat compared to two years ago when Image Comics had six comics in the Top 50 in January 2022.

Five of Image Comics’ six comics were from the Hasbro license. This is impressive and shows how valuable the Hasbro license has been to Image Comics. Without it, Image Comics would be tied with Titan Comics with just one title in the Top 50.

Titan Comics placed one comic in the Top 50 with Conan the Barbarian #6.

The Battle for the Top 75

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 51-75 range typically sell in the 29,000 to 25,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed forty-three comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the forty comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 75 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics also had forty-three comics in the Top 75 in January 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as Marvel Comics had forty-seven comics in the Top 75 in January 2022.

The fact that Marvel Comics sold less in the Top 75 than they did two years ago is troubling. Yes, Marvel Comics is beating the hell out of DC Comics. But, that means nothing as well all know DC Comics is not even trying anymore. This could be a sign that Marvel Comics’ titles are getting lower sales numbers which is now allowing Image Comics, armed with their Hasbro license, to cut into Marvel Comics’ market share.

DC Comics placed nineteen comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were down sharply from the twenty-six comics that DC Comics had in the Top 75 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had twenty comics in the Top 75 in January 2023. Numbers were flat compared to two years ago as DC Comics had nineteen comics in the Top 75 in January 2022.

Image Comics placed eleven comics in the Top 75. Month-over-month sales were up from the seven comics that Image Comics had in the Top 75 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had six comics in the Top 75 in January 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Image Comics had seven comics in the Top 75 in January 2022.

Six of Image Comics’ eleven comics came from the Hasbro license. One came from the Universal Monsters license. One came from the Spawn franchise. One came from Ghost Machine. If Image was still relying on all of their little niche titles then they would have had only two comics in the Top 75.

Titan Comics and Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic apiece in the Top 75.

The Battle for the Top 100

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 76-100 range typically sell in the 24,000 to 18,000 unit range.

Marvel Comics placed fifty-seven comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up from the forty-nine comics that Marvel Comics had in the Top 100 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had fifty-six comics in the Top 100 in January 2023. Numbers were down from two years ago as Marvel Comics had sixty comics in the Top 100 in January 2022.

Thanos #2 crashed from the number at the number 29 spot down to the number 77 spot. It appears that Christopher Cantwell was not successful in getting a large chunk of the readers to come back for more.

Guardians of the Galaxy #10 fell from the number 80 spot to the number 91 spot. It will be interesting to see if this title can remain in the Top 100 next month.

DC Comics placed twenty-seven comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were down from the thirty-five comics that DC Comics had in the Top 100 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had twenty-eight comics in the Top 100 in January 2023. Numbers were slightly up from two years ago as DC Comics had twenty-six comics in the Top 100 in January 2022.

Shazam #7 fell from the number 67 spot to the number 76 spot. It is too bad to see this title selling outside of the Top 75. Next month will be a pivotal one to see if this young title can climb back into the Top 75.

Image Comics placed fourteen comics in the Top 100. Month-over-month sales were up from the eleven comics that Image Comics had in the Top 100 in December 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Image Comics had seven comics in the Top 100 in January 2023. Numbers were up from two years ago as Image Comics had ten comics in the Top 100 in January 2022.

Six of Image Comics’ fourteen comics came from the Hasbro license. Three came from the Spawn franchise. One came from Ghost Machine. One came from the Universal Monsters license. Image Comics would have only had three comics in the Top 100 if they were still only relying on their small niche titles. Focusing on more mainstream comics has been paying off for Image Comics in the sales rankings.

Titan Comics and Dynamite Entertainment placed one comic apiece in the Top 100.

The Joshua Williamson Award For The Writer With The Most Titles In The Top 50

Three writers scored two issues from the same title in the Top 50 in January 2024.

Zeb Wells had two issues with Amazing Spider-Man #41 at the number 3 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #42 at the number 10 spot.

Victor LaVelle snikt-ed his way to two issues with Wolverine #41 at the number 12 spot and Wolverine #42 at the number 36 spot.

Ryan North had two issues with Fantastic Four #15 at the number 30 spot and Fantastic Four #16 at the number 47 spot.

Several writers had two issues from different titles in the Top 50.

Cody Ziglar had two issues with Miles Morales: Spider-Man #15 at the number 17 spot and Giant-Size Spider-Man #1 at the number 38 spot.

Tom Taylor had two titles with Nightwing #110 at the number 27 spot and Titans #7 at the number 37.

Jonathan Hickman had two titles with Ultimate Spider-Man #1 at the number 1 spot and G.O.D.S. #4 at the number 33 spot.

Four writers had three titles in the Top 50 in January 2024.

Gerry Duggan had three titles with Fall of the House of X #1 at the number 2 spot, X-Men #30 at the number 13 spot, and Invincible Iron Man #14 at the number 42 spot.

Al Ewing had three titles with Resurrection of Magneto #1 at the number 15 spot, Immortal Thor #6 at the number 25 spot, and Venom #29 at the number 31 spot.

Chip Zdarsky had three titles with Batman #141 at the number 4 spot, Avengers: Twilight #1 at the number 8 spot, and Avengers: Twilight #2 at the number 29 spot.

Jed MacKay had three titles with Vengeance of the Moon Knight #1 at the number 11 spot, Avengers #9 at the number 20 spot, and Doctor Strange #11 at the number 44 spot.

However, there was one writer who stood head and shoulders above these writers with a whopping five issues in the Top 50! That would be Joshua Williamson with Cobra Commander #1 at the number 7 spot, Superman #10 at the number 24 spot, Duke #1 at the number 28 spot, Duke #2 at the number 35 spot, and Batman and Robin #5 at the number 41 spot.

Therefore, the winner of the Joshua Williamson Award for January 2024 is…Joshua Williamson! Hey, this award has its name for a reason!

Battle of the Franchises

The Spider-Man franchise took first place with three comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and nine comics in the Top 50.

The X-Men franchise took second place with two comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and eight comics in the Top 50.

The Avengers franchise took third place with one comic in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50.

The Hasbro franchise took fourth place with two comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

The Batman franchise took fifth place with one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

110 Timeless #1 (2023) (Marvel Comics)

140 Power Girl Uncovered #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)

151 Titans Beast World Tour Atlantis #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)

157 Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #1 (2024) (DC Comics)

189 Titans Beast World Tour Star City #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)

As usual, we will address most of these debut issues in their franchise sections below. However, there are a few that I want to touch on now.

John Constantine, Hellblazer Dead in America #1 had an unimpressive debut at the number 55 spot. It looks like Simon Spurrier’s eight-issue mini-series is going to rapidly fall out of the Top 100 by the second or third issue.

Beware the Planet of the Apes #1 debuted at the number 104 spot. It is never good when a title is a dead walking title with the debut issue. This continues the trend of FOX properties going to die at the hands of Disney.

Power Pack: Into the Storm #1 had a horrendous debut failing to even make the Top 200 and ending up unranked. Evidently, rolling out the original Power Pack creative team of Louise Jones Simonson and June Brigman did nothing to get readers interested in this title.

Big Events

Fall of the House of X

2 Fall of the House of X #1

13 X-Men #30 (Fall of the House of X)

50 Dead X-Men #1 (Fall of the House of X)

52 Cable #1 (Fall of the House of X)

134 X-Force #47 (Fall of the X-Men)  (Resolicitation)

Fall of the House of X had one comic in the Top 10, two in the Top 25, and three in the Top 50. The main big event title did extremely well. However, the new titles tying into this big event did not.

Gang War

3 Amazing Spider-Man #41 (Gang War)

10 Amazing Spider-Man #42 (Gang War)

17 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #15 (Gang War)

60 Amazing Spider-Man #40 (Gang War) (Resolicitation)

68 Daredevil: Gang War #2 (Gang War)

111 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #14 (Gang War) (Resolicitation)

114 Spider-Woman #3 (Gang War)

117 Amazing Spider-Man #39 (Gang War) (Resolicitation)

122 Luke Cage: Gang War #3 (Gang War)

190 Spider-Woman #2 (Gang War) (Resolicitation)

Gang War had two comics in the Top 10, three in the Top 25, and three in the Top 50. The two Gang War-related issues in the Top 10 would have been there regardless of this big event. It appears that Gang War has only succeeded in pulling Miles Morales back up in the rankings. All of the rest of the sales rankings are poor.

Beast World

57 Titans Beast World #4 (Of 6)

65 Titans Beast World #5 (Of 6)

93 Titans Beast World #6 (Of 6)

151 Titans Beast World Tour Atlantis #1 (One-Shot)

181 Titans Beast World #3 (Of 6) (Resolicitation)

189 Titans Beast World Tour Star City #1 (One-Shot)

191 Nightwing #109 (Titans Beast World) (Resolicitation)

Beast World had zero comics in the Top 10, zero in the Top 25, and zero in the Top 50. This big event concludes on a down note as none of these issues sold well. The Beast World one-shots continue to be sales busts.

Hasbro Universe

5 Transformers #4

7 Cobra Commander #1 (Of 5)

28 Duke #1 (Of 5) (Resolicitation)

35 Duke #2 (Of 5) L

49 GI Joe A Real American Hero #303

74 Transformers #3 (Resolicitation)

127 Transformers #2 (Resolicitation)

138 Transformers #1 (Resolicitation)

173 GI Joe A Real American Hero #302 (Resolicitation)

The Hasbro Universe had two comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50.

Transformers #4 dipped from the number 3 spot to the number 5 spot. This title continues to be a total sales monster and a fixture in the Top 10.

Cobra Commander #1 had a stunning debut scoring the number 7 spot. It is crazy to see a GI Joe title in the Top 10! This is something that we have not seen in a long time. Seriously, when IDW Publishing had the license for GI Joe nobody would have believed me if I told them that in the near future a Cobra Commander mini-series would debut in the Top 10.

Duke #2 dipped from the number 16 spot to the number 35 spot. Keep in mind that Duke #2 shipped in the final week of January. This is another example of how shipping in the last week of a month does not necessarily doom a title.

What is crazy is that the resolicitation for Duke #1 nearly cracked the Top 25 by taking the number 28 spot. That is incredible! This five-issue mini-series has been a smash hit so far.

GI Joe A Real American Hero #303 climbed from the number 58 spot to the number 49 spot. It is impressive that this title is back in the Top 50 given that this title is not as new reader-friendly as the other Hasbro titles.

Star Wars Franchise

22 Star Wars: Darth Vader #42

26 Star Wars #42

32 Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances #1

79 Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2 #8

83 Star Wars The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight #4

87 Star Wars: The High Republic #3 (Phase III)

95 Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #42

152 Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi #4

164 Star Wars Dark Droids #5 (Dark Droids) (Resolicitation)

171 Star Wars Doctor Aphra #40

177 Star Wars: Darth Vader #41 (Dark Droids) (Resolicitation)

195 Star Wars The Mandalorian Season 2 #7 (Resolicitation)

The Star Wars franchise had one comic in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50. This was better than December 2023 when the Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up in the Top 10 and Top 25, but down in the Top 50 as the Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50 in January 2023.

Numbers were up in the Top 10 and Top 25, but flat in the Top 50 from two years ago as the Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50 in January 2022.

Star Wars: Darth Vader #42 bounced back up from the number 63 spot to the number 22 spot. The Sith Lord rarely stays down in the rankings for very long.

Star Wars #42 ticked up from the number 36 spot to the number 26 spot. This is the third straight month that this title has climbed up in the rankings. Charles Soule is doing an excellent job getting readers excited about this title. Of course, the fact that this title stars the original trilogy character is a big boost to its popularity.

Star Wars: Thrawn Alliances #1 had an average debut failing to make the Top 25 and coming in at the number 32 spot. This is despite being boosted by two open order covers, one reprint over, and two incentive covers. This four-issue mini-series paired up the popular novelist Tomthy Zsahn with Jody Houser who never finds sales success in mainstream comics. It appears that this mini-series is going to struggle to conclude in the Top 50.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 2 #8 rocketed back up the rankings from the number 151 spot to the number 79 spot. Being outside of the Top 75 for what used to be a popular show is still less than impressive. But, at least this is a positive sign that this eight-issue mini-series might conclude in the Top 100.

Star Wars The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight #4 ticked up from the number 88 spot to the number 83 spot. This is the third straight month that this title has made tiny gains in the rankings. But, any gain is better than a loss! Still, the High Republic titles continue to be titles that struggle to remain in the Top 100.

Star Wars: The High Republic #3 dropped from the number 83 spot to the number 87 spot. Again, High Republic titles have to fight furiously to remain in the Top 100.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #42 climbed up from the number 105 spot to the number 95 spot. This is the second straight month that this title has ascended in the rankings.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi #4 managed to claw its way back into the Top 200 by going from unranked to the number 152 spot. This title is still a sales disaster. Pairing Jody Houser who struggles to have sales success with a TV show that was not that popular has not proven to be a winning formula for Marvel Comics.

As usual, Doctor Aphra is the basement dweller of the Star Wars franchise. Star Wars Doctor Aphra #40 dropped from the number 134 spot to the number 171 spot. This is not uncommon as this title usually yo-yos between the 170s and the 130s every month.

Spider-Man Franchise

1 Ultimate Spider-Man #1

3 Amazing Spider-Man #41 (Gang War)

10 Amazing Spider-Man #42 (Gang War)

17 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #15 (Gang War)

21 Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #1

31 Venom #29

38 Giant-Size Spider-Man #1

40 Jackpot #1

48 Superior Spider-Man #3

53 Spider-Gwen: Smash #2

54 Spider-Boy #3

60 Amazing Spider-Man #40 (Gang War) (Resolicitation)

70 Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #2

78 Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #3

81 Kid Venom Origins #1

107 Amazing Spider-Man #252 Facsimile Edition

111 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #14 (Gang War) (Resolicitation)

114 Spider-Woman #3 (Gang War)

116 Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #4

117 Amazing Spider-Man #39 (Gang War) (Resolicitation)

123 Carnage #3

131 Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #5

156 Carnage #2 (Resolicitation)

161 Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #4

176 Spider-Gwen: Smash #1 (Resolicitation)

185 Superior Spider-Man #2 (Resolicitation)

190 Spider-Woman #2 (Gang War) (Resolicitation)

197 Spider-Boy #2 (Resolicitation)

The Spider-Man franchise had three comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and nine comics in the Top 50. This was better than December 2023 when the Spider-Man franchise had three titles in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up/down as the Spider-Man franchise had three titles in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50 in January 2023.

Numbers were up from two years ago as the Spider-Man franchise had one title in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50 in January 2022.

Peter Parker is a sales juggernaut. It is rather phenomenal. Peter placed two issues in the Top 3 and three issues in the Top 10. That is unheard of and more proof that Peter is the GOAT of all superhero characters from Marvel Comics and DC Comics.

Ultimate Spider-Man #1 snagged the number 1 spot in the rankings. Yeah, fans’ desire to see Peter Parker and MJ married is strong. Sorry, Joey Q!

Amazing Spider-Man #41 scored the number 3 spot and Amazing Spider-Man #42 took the number 10 spot. We always see the two issues of Amazing Spider-Man score Top 10 finishes every month. What is crazy is that Amazing Spider-Man is so popular that the resolicitation for Amazing Spider-Man #40 took the number 60 spot! That is uncommon for a resolicited issue.

Spine-Tingling Spider-Man #4 continued its freefall in the rankings as it slipped from the number 117 spot to the number 161 spot. Saladin Ahmed has struggled to get readers interested in this story.

All right, let’s take a look at the knock-off Spider-Men.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #15 dipped down from the number 15 spot to the number 17 spot. While Gang War has largely been a sales bust, it has been a massive boost to Miles’ title. Miles was down around the number 92 spot before Gang War began. This is great news for Marvel Comics.

Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #1 had a solid debut taking the number 21 spot. However, it was all downhill from there as Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #2 fell to the number 70 spot, Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #3 dropped to the number 78 spot, Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #4 dropped to the number 116 spot, Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #5 dropped to the number 131 spot.

I love Miguel’s character. I wish Marvel Comics had paired Miquel up with a better writer than Steve Orlando. Also, this is the second Miguel mini-series that has had all of its issues dropped in the same month which always hurts sales numbers. Always. It would be nice for Marvel Comics to treat Miguel with some more respect and let him have his mini-series released on a normal one-issue-a-month schedule. Five issues in one month is just insane.

Superior Spider-Man #3 dipped from the number 41 spot to the number 48 spot. This is a positive sign as it seems this title’s descent in the rankings has slowed as it gets close to its happy place in the rankings.

Spider-Boy #3 continued to fall as it dropped from the number 29 spot to the number 54 spot. This is a far cry from Spider-Boy #1’s debut number at the number 1 spot! Dan Slott has not been able to get readers that excited about this young title. To be fair, Spider-Boy #3 did ship in the last week of January. On the other hand, it was boosted by three open order covers and two incentive covers. There is a good chance that Spider-Boy might be able to climb back into the Top 50 in February.

All right, let’s hop over to the Venomverse titles and check in on them.

Venom #29 fell from the number 13 spot to the number 31 spot. This is a bit unusual as Venom is normally a lock for the Top 25. But, I have a feeling that this is just a temporary sales blip and Venom will be back in the Top 25 next month.

Kid Venom Origins #1 had an awful debut failing to even make the Top 75 and coming in at the number 81 spot. This one-shot issue collected all four parts of Kid Venom’s story from Death of the Venomverse.

Carnage #3 dipped from the number 120 spot to the number 123 spot. This title did ship in the final week of January, but it also had one open order cover and two incentive covers. Things are not looking good for Torunn Grønbekk as she is struggling to get readers interested in this title right from the start.

Okay, let’s finish up with the Spider-Ladies.

Jackpot #1 had an unimpressive debut coming in at the number 40 spot. This is a one-shot issue written by Celeste Bronfam who is a writer for children’s TV shows and whose only comic book experience is writing My Little Pony. Not sure how Bronfam’s resume would make Marvel Comics editorial think she would be a great hire for a mainstream superhero comic book. But, here we are. Jackpot #1 reads like an uncreative ripoff of Dial H for Hero. So, I am not that bullish on Bronfam’s upcoming Black Cat and Jackpot mini-series.

Spider-Gwen: Smash #2 flamed out in dramatic fashion plummeting from the number 8 spot out of the Top 50 and to the number 53 spot. This is despite being boosted by two open order covers and two incentive covers. Clearly, many readers were not impressed with what Melissa Flores delivered in the debut issue. This does not surprise me at all. Spider-Gwen is a character who has been getting gradually diminished returns in the sales rankings. Also, Flores has no record of sales success. We shall see if this four-issue mini-series can rebound next month or if it ends up concluding outside of the Top 75.

Spider-Woman #3 crashed from the number 79 spot to the number 114 spot. This title has been erratic. It had an awful debut coming in at the number 101 spot then it bounced up to the number 79 spot and now it is down at the number 114 spot. Next month should be a good indicator if this title is doomed to be a Dead Walking Title going forward.

X-Men Franchise

2 Fall of the House of X #1

6 Rise of the Powers of X #1

12 Wolverine #41

13 X-Men #30 (Fall of the House of X)

15 Resurrection of Magneto #1

36 Wolverine #42

43 Predator Vs. Wolverine #4 (Resolicitation)

50 Dead X-Men #1 (Fall of the House of X)

52 Cable #1 (Fall of the House of X)

58 X-Force #48

90 Immortal X-Men #18 (Fall of the X-Men) (Resolicitation)

134 X-Force #47 (Fall of the X-Men) (Resolicitation)

145 Wolverine #40 (Fall of the X-Men) (Resolicitation)

162 Wolverine by Claremont & Miller #1 Facsimile Edition (2023 Printing) (Resolicitation)

The X-Men franchise had two comics in the Top 10, five comics in the Top 25, and eight comics in the Top 50. This was better than December 2023 when the X-Men franchise had one title in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up as the X-Men franchise had one title in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50 in January 2023.

Numbers were down in the Top 10 but up in the Top 25 and Top 50 from two years ago as the X-Men franchise had three titles in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50 in January 2022.

Fall of the House of X #1 had a phenomenal debut grabbing the number 2 spot. This issue was supported by five open order covers, one reprint cover, three incentive covers, and four retailer-exclusive covers. It looks like fan interest is high with this latest big event story for the X-Men.

Rise of the Powers of X #1 had an impressive debut scoring the number 6 spot. Of course, keep in mind that this issue was boosted by five open order covers, one reprint cover, three incentive covers, and two retailer-exclusive covers. Whew! It will be interesting to see how well this title does next month.

X-Men #30 dipped from the number 5 spot to the number 13 spot. This issue was propelled by four open order covers, one incentive cover, and three retailer-exclusive covers.

Dead X-Men #1 had a poor debut just barely sneaking into the Top 50 at the number 50 spot. Now, this issue did ship in the final week of January 2024. But, this issue also came with two open order covers and two incentive covers. It is tough to predict how this four-issue miniseries is going to perform. Next month should give us a better idea.

X-Force #48 climbed from the number 77 spot to the number 58 spot. This stopped a two-month freefall in the rankings for X-Force. It will be interesting to see if this title can climb back into the Top 50 next month.

All right, let’s check out the various solo titles.

Wolverine #41 rose from the number 23 spot to the number 12 spot. This is the second straight month this title has climbed up in the rankings. This is also the highest I have seen Wolverine in the sales rankings in a long time. Very impressive.

Wolverine #42 dropped from the number 12 spot to the number 36 spot. This is a fantastic ranking for the second issue of a title shipped in the same month. This issue also busts the narrative that shipping in the final week of a month dooms a title to a bad sales ranking.

It should be noted that the resolicitation of Predator Vs. Wolverine #4 at the number 43 spot is ridiculous! A resolicitation of an issue scoring a Top 50 ranking is impressive. This mini-series was pure gold for Marvel Comics.

Resurrection of Magneto #1 had a strong debut scoring the number 15 spot. This issue was boosted by four open order covers and three incentive covers. This four-issue mini-series looks like it has a chance to be a strong seller. I don’t have much interest in any X-Men titles, but I will say that Luciano Vecchio’s artwork on this issue was phenomenal!

Cable #1 had a disappointing debut falling to make the Top 50 and coming in at the number 52 spot. It looks like the appeal of old 1990s writer Fabian Nicieza did not move the needle much. I am not feeling bullish about this four-issue mini-series.

Avengers Franchise

8 Avengers: Twilight #1

20 Avengers #9

25 Immortal Thor #6

29 Avengers: Twilight #2

39 Captain America #5

42 Invincible Iron Man #14

45 Incredible Hulk #8

62 Sensational She-Hulk #4

75 Marvel Meow #1

96 Thunderbolts #2

122 Luke Cage: Gang War #3 (Gang War)

124 Avengers Inc. #5

125 Black Panther #8

137 Captain Marvel #4

149 Sentry #2

154 Incredible Hulk #7 (Resolicitation)

155 Capwolf & the Howling Commandos #4

167 White Widow #3

182 Sensational She-Hulk #3 (Resolicitation)

The Avengers franchise had one comic in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and seven comics in the Top 50. This was better in the Top 10 but flat in the Top 25 and Top 50 than in December 2023 when the Avengers franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were flat in the Top 10 and Top 25, but up in the Top 50 as the Avengers franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50 in January 2023.

Numbers were down in the Top 10 but up in the Top 25 and the Top 50 from two years ago as the Avengers franchise had three titles in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50 in January 2022.

Avengers: Twilight #1 scored a fantastic debut taking the number 8 spot. This issue was bolstered by six open order covers, one reprint cover, three incentive covers, and six retailer covers. Wow. That is a lot! Avengers: Twilight #2 dropped from the number 8 spot to the number 29 spot. This issue also disproved the narrative that shipping in the final week of a month is a sales death knell. I will be curious to see how this six-issue mini-series performs next month. It is tough to tell if this is going to be a legit strong seller or if the debut issue was artificially boosted by an insane amount of variant covers.

Avengers #9 dipped down from the number 17 spot to the number 20 spot. This is the same place in the rankings that Avengers #7 took two months ago. Talk about consistency! Avengers continues to be a reliable Top 25 title.

Thunderbolts #2 crashed and burned falling from the number 26 spot to the number 96 spot. Jackson Lanzing and Colin Kelly carry on their tradition of writing stories that drive away readers.

Now let’s check out the solo titles.

Immortal Thor #6 dropped from the number 14 spot to the number 25 spot. This is the lowest sales ranking for this young title. I still think Immortal Thor has a chance to remain a consistent Top 25 seller, but we will learn more next month.

Captain America #5  climbed up from the number 44 spot to the number 39 spot. This is the second straight month that Captain America has gone up in the sales rankings. This is fantastic news for this young title. Perhaps JMS’ Captain America will be able to remain a consistent Top 50 seller.

Capwolf & the Howling Commandos #4 inched up from the number 168 spot to the number 155. And with this issue, this four-issue limited series has concluded. What a complete sales disaster this title was. I have no idea how Stephanie Phillips continues to get work with Marvel Comics or DC Comics since all of her titles have been one sales disaster after another. I guess the editorial staffs are seeing something that I am just missing.

Invincible Iron Man #14 dipped from the number 37 spot to the number 42 spot. This is the second straight month that Mr. Emma Frost’s title has managed to stay in the Top 50.

Incredible Hulk #8 dropped from the number 20 spot to the number 45 spot. I would imagine that this is due to this issue shipping in the final week of January. This title should climb back up in the rankings next month.

Luke Cage: Gang War #3 dipped from the 119 spot to the 122 spot. It looks like this title has found its happy place in the sales rankings. It appears that this four-issue mini-series is going to likely finish outside of the Top 125.

Black Panther #8 climbed up from the number 174 spot to the number 125 spot. This is pretty much where we expect to see this title every month. What a total sales disaster this rebooted Black Panther title has been. A character this high profile and popular should not be a Dead Walking Title every month. It’s time for Marvel Comics to put a real superhero comic book writer on this title.

Sentry #2 crashed and burned in dramatic fashion plummeting from the number 55 spot out of the Top 100 and down to the number 149 spot. Only a Marvel Comics editor would be surprised by the fact that nobody is interested in a mantle swap Sentry. This title is another sales dud born from Marvel Comics’ editorial’s bad ideas.

All right, let’s check out the ladies of the Avengers franchise.

Sensational She-Hulk #4 climbed up from the number 86 spot to the number 62 spot. This is roughly where She-Hulk #3 was in November 2023 when it took the number 68 spot. It appears that this title may have found its happy place between the 60-70 spots in the rankings. That is not great, but it is much better than the other ladies of the Avengers franchise.

Captain Marvel #4 ticked up from the number 169 spot to the number 137 spot. This title is a total sales disaster. Putting Alyssa Wong on this title has blown up in Marvel Comics’ face. Carol never sells well so she is not a character that can support a writer with a bad sales history like Wong. Captain Marvel has been a Dead Title Walking ever since the second issue. Ooof.

White Widow contains its stunning death spiral in the rankings. White Widow #3 plummeted from the number 112 spot out of the Top 150 and down to the number 167 spot. Keep in mind that White Widow #1 debuted at the number 22 spot! A 145-spot drop in just two issues is breathtaking. This four-issue mini-series looks like it may not even be able to conclude in the Top 175. Obviously, Sarah Gailey’s story chased away readers in large numbers. I am not surprised that hiring a total rando to write a mainstream superhero comic book didn’t lead to sales success.

Batman Franchise

4 Batman #141

23 Batman Superman Worlds Finest #23

27 Nightwing #110

34 Detective Comics #1081

41 Batman and Robin #5

59 Birds of Prey #5

61 Poison Ivy #18

66 Batman Superman World’s Finest 2024 Annual #1 (One-Shot)

84 Catwoman #61

89 Batman and Robin 2024 Annual #1 (One-Shot)

94 Batman Off-World #3 (Of 6)

100 Batman Beyond #1 Facsimile Edition

103 Detective Comics #1080 (Resolicitation)

106 Batman the Brave and the Bold #9

109 Harley Quinn #36

113 Penguin #6

132 Batman #140 (Resolicitation)

141 Outsiders #3

146 Batman #428 Robin Lives (One-Shot) (Resolicitation)

157 Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries #1 (2024)

168 Batman Gargoyle of Gotham #2 (Of 4) (Resolicitation)

191 Nightwing #109 (Titans Beast World) (Resolicitation)

194 Harley Quinn #35 (Resolicitation)

The Batman franchise had one comic in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and five comics in the Top 50. This was worse than December 2023 when the Batman franchise had three titles in the Top 10, six titles in the Top 25, and thirteen titles in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down as the Batman franchise had three titles in the Top 10, six titles in the Top 25, and ten titles in the Top 50 in January 2023.

Numbers were also down from two years ago as the Batman franchise had one title in the Top 10, five titles in the Top 25, and ten titles in the Top 50 in January 2022.

Let’s start with the Bruce Wayne titles. Batman #141 dipped from the number 2 spot to the number 4 spot. This title continues to be the crown jewel for DC Comics.

Batman Superman World’s Finest #23 climbed from the number 30 spot to the number 23 spot. This is the second straight month that this title has gone up in the rankings.

Batman Superman World’s Finest 2024 Annual #1 came in at the number 66 spot. Annuals rarely sell well so this is not too bad for this issue.

Detective Comics #1081 came in at the number 34 spot which is slightly lower than this title has been in the past few months.

Batman and Robin #5 dipped from the number 35 spot to the number 41 spot. This title continues to hover in the lower part of the Top 50. DC Comics needs this title to remain a consistent Top 50 seller.

Batman and Robin 2024 Annual #1 took the number 89 spot. Again, this is an annual so no real surprises where it ended up in the rankings.

Batman Off-World #3 dropped from the number 64 spot to the number 94 spot. Wow. This title has been a massive sales disappointment. I am sure that DC Comics thought Jason Aaron would be able to sell more units off his name alone. This does not surprise me too much as we have seen Aaron struggle with the quality of his writing and he has had spotty sales success as of late. Readers have not been hooked by what Aaron is delivering on this title. There is a good chance this six-issue mini-series finishes outside of the Top 100.

Batman the Brave and the Bold #9 bounced up from the number 177 spot to the number 106 spot. This is the second straight month that this title has climbed up the rankings. This is an amazing turnaround from the number 196 spot that Batman the Brave and the Bold #7 had in November 2023.

Next up is the old Robin himself, Dick Grayson. Nightwing #110 climbed up from the number 38 spot to the number 27 spot. This is the second straight month that this title has gone up in the rankings. Dick Grayson remains the best-selling Batman franchise character outside of Bruce Wayne.

Okay, let’s look at the team titles.

Birds of Prey #5 fell from the number 47 spot to the number 59 spot. This is interesting because Birds of Prey #3 was also in the number 59 spot in November 2023. It looks like it is going to be a struggle for Birds of Prey to remain a Top 50 title.

Outsiders #3 ticked up from the number 142 spot to the number 141 spot. It appears that this title has found its natural place in the rankings. To be selling this awfully with only the second and third issues is not a surprise. Again, we are dealing with Lanzing and Kelly as the writers.

Poison Ivy #18 fell from the number 39 spot to the number 61 spot. This title has begun to lose steam since this is even worse than Poison Ivy #16 which took the number 53 spot in November 2023. Poison Ivy had been a strong seller during its first twelve issues. I will admit that it caught me by surprise! We shall see over the next few months if Poison Ivy can make a rally or if this title is now going to be sitting in the bottom of the Top 75 going forward.

Catwoman #61 bounced up from the number 111 spot to the number 84 spot. This title benefitted from three open order covers and two incentive covers. I am not surprised. It is not uncommon for Catwoman to sneak into the bottom of the Top 100 and fall back out again the next month. Side note, the Dani variant cover is gorgeous. The Jorge Fornes cover is amazing, too.

Harley Quinn #36 rose from the number 150 spot to the number 109 spot. This title is forever doomed to languish in the Dead Titles Walking category. Remember when Harley was a sales beast? Those were the days.

Okay, now to our lone villain title.

Penguin #6 climbed from the number 159 spot to the number 113 spot. With this issue, this six-issue limited series has concluded. Tom King’s title was a Dead Title Walking with just its second issue and spent the rest of the mini-series in that category. This mini-series was a total sales bust for DC Comics.

Superman Franchise

18 Action Comics #1061

23 Batman Superman Worlds Finest #23

24 Superman #10

64 Kneel Before Zod #1 (Of 12)

66 Batman Superman World’s Finest 2024 Annual #1 (One-Shot)

92 Superman Lost #10 (Of 10)

112 Power Girl #5

140 Power Girl Uncovered #1 (One-Shot)

163 Superman 78 The Metal Curtain #3 (Of 6)

198 Action Comics 2023 Annual #1 (One-Shot) (Resolicitation)

The Superman franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, three comics in the Top 25, and three comics in the Top 50. This was better in the Top 25 and flat in the Top 50 than December 2023 when the Superman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up in the Top 25, but flat in the Top 50 as the Superman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50 in January 2023.

Numbers were up from two years ago as the Superman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50 in January 2022.

Action Comics #1061 shot up from the number 45 spot to the number 18 spot. This issue was supported by four open order covers and three incentive covers. Action Comics #1061 is Jason Aaron’s debut on this title. I am fascinated to see how Aaron performs with Action Comics. Aaron has been a surprising sales bust on Batman Off-World. So, it will be interesting to see if Aaron has more success with Clark Kent than he did with Bruce Wayne.

Superman #10 stayed rock solid taking the number 24 spot which is the same spot in the rankings Superman #9 had in December 2023. Joshua Williamson has resuscitated this moribund franchise with the return of Clark Kent as Superman. This title has been one of the rare hits for DC Comics and their Dawn of DC initiative.

Superman Lost #10 fell from the number 85 spot to the number 92 spot. With this issue, Superman Lost concludes. Christopher Priest’s limited series was another sales bust for DC Comics as it spent much of its time in the Dead Titles Walking category.

Superman 78 The Metal Curtain #3 dropped from the 146 spot to the number 163 spot. This is the second straight month this title has fallen in the rankings. At just the halfway point of this six-issue limited series, it is obvious that it is a complete sales failure for DC Comics. At this point, this mini-series is going to have to struggle to remain ranked in the Top 200.

Kneel Before Zod #1 had a horrendous debut falling to even make the Top 50 and coming in at the number 64 spot. With such a low debut number, I am not at all bullish on Joe Casey’s twelve-issue limited series going forward.

Power Girl #5 rose from the number 148 spot to the number 112 spot. This issue was supported by two open order covers, two incentive covers, two retailer exclusive covers, and one event exclusive cover. DC Comics went all out to help this title that was dead in the rankings right out of the gate. Regardless, this title just cannot escape the Dead Titles Walking category. I love Power Girl’s character.  P.G. deserves so much better than having Leah Williamson as the writer. Side note, the Will Jack variant cover is phenomenal.

Justice League Franchise

14 Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #4 (Of 7)

19 Wonder Woman #5

51 Green Lantern #7

72 The Flash #5

85 Green Arrow #8

102 Trinity Special #1 (One-Shot)

108 Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #3 (Of 7) (Resolicitation)

126 Green Lantern War Journal #5

153 The Flash #4 (Resolicitation)

180 Wonder Woman #4 (Resolicitation)

188 Fire & Ice Welcome To Smallville #5 (Of 6)

193 Green Arrow #7 (Resolicitation)

The Justice League franchise had zero comics in the Top 10, two comics in the Top 25, and two comics in the Top 50. This was worse than December 2023 when the Justice League franchise had one title in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were up as the Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50 in January 2023.

Numbers were up from two years ago as the Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50 in January 2022.

Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #4 dipped from the number 9 spot to the number 14 spot. This seven-issue limited series has been a smash success for DC Comics! As a die-hard Kaiju fan, I love seeing this title enjoying such amazing sales success. I am happily surprised to see how popular this title has been.

Wonder Woman #5 took the number 19 spot which is the same number that Wonder Woman #4 took in the rankings in December 2023. Talk about consistency! This issue was helped by two open order covers, one reprint cover, two incentive covers, and one retailer exclusive. I have zero interest in Tom King’s Wonder Woman, but it is fantastic for DC C0mics to have Diana back where she belongs in the Top 25. DC Comics desperately needs more of their franchises to be in the Top 25 other than just Batman and Superman. Side note, the Pablo Villalobos cover of Wonder Woman in her swimsuit is phenomenal!

Trinity Special #1 crashed and burned on its debut as it came in at the number 102 spot. Tom King’s one-shot did ship in the last week of January, but it was boosted by two open order covers and two incentive covers. In a world where we have Wonder Girls like Donna Troy, Cassie Sandmark, and Yara Flor, I am unsure of the need for another young derivate version of Wonder Woman. But, here we are.

Green Lantern #7 dipped down from the number 40 spot to the number 51 spot. This title has begun to struggle to remain in the Top 50. It is imperative for DC Comics that the Green Lantern franchise remains a Top 50 seller.

Having said that, Hal Jordan is enjoying tremendous success compared to the other Green Lantern title. Green Lantern War Journal #5 ticked up from the number 137 spot to the number 126 spot. The good news is that this is the second straight month that this title has climbed up in the sales rankings. The bad news is that this is still a dead title walking.

The Flash #5 ticked up from the number 89 spot to the number 72 spot. This is still way too low for the Flash franchise. DC Comics needs this to be in the Top 50 to remain competitive with Marvel Comics. Having said that, this is the second straight month that The Flash has climbed up in the rankings.

Green Arrow #8 climbed up from the number 99 spot to the number 85 spot. This is also too low for Green Arrow. However, the good news is that this is also the second consecutive month that Green Arrow has climbed up in the rankings.

Fire & Ice Welcome To Smallville #5 fell from the number 171 spot to the number 188 spot. This six-issue mini-series continues to be an utter dumpster fire. Nothing about this title is up to the standard of a mainstream superhero comic book from one of the Big Two. Titles like this make me wonder if DC Comics is purposely trying to submarine themselves in the rankings.

Amazons Attack #4 was unranked for the third straight month. This title is such a predictable disaster. A lack of talent in the writer position combined with a cast of characters with limited fan appeal rarely leads to success.

Justice Society Franchise

105 Wesley Dodds the Sandman #4 (Of 6)

136 Jay Garrick The Flash #4 (Of 6)

165 Alan Scott the Green Lantern #4 (Of 6)

183 Justice Society of America #8 (Of 12) (Resolicitation)

The Justice Society franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. This was the same as in December 2023.

Wesley Dodds the Sandman #4 dipped from the number 98 spot to the number 105 spot. All of these JSA-related mini-series have been sales failures. But, Wesley Dodds has at least led the pack every single month.

Jay Garrick The Flash #4 climbed from the number 143 spot to the number 136 spot. This is the second straight month that this title has climbed up in the rankings. This is also the title that I thought was going to be the best-selling JSA-related mini-series of the bunch. I completely missed that prediction.

Alan Scott the Green Lantern #4 ticked up from the number 166 spot to the number 165 spot. This mini-series has been a sales disaster. We all saw this coming since Tim Sheridan is the writer. Sheridan has never had any sales success for DC Comics.

Mantle Swap Titles

11 Vengeance of the Moon Knight #1 (Marvel Comics)

17 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #15 (Gang War) (Marvel Comics)

48 Superior Spider-Man #3 (Marvel Comics)

68 Daredevil: Gang War #2 (Gang War) (Marvel Comics)

88 Punisher #3 (Marvel Comics)

111 Miles Morales: Spider-Man #14 (Gang War) (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

137 Captain Marvel #4 (Marvel Comics)

149 Sentry #2 (Marvel Comics)

159 Blue Beetle #5 (DC Comics)

185 Superior Spider-Man #2 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

Unranked: Speed Force #3 (DC Comics)

There were zero mantle swap titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50. This was flat compared to December 2023 when there were zero mantle swap titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down in the Top 10 and flat in the Top 25 and Top 50 as there were two mantle swap titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and two titles in the Top 50 in January 2023.

Daredevil: Gang War #2 fell from the number 53 spot down ot the number 68 spot. Remember when Electra used to be her own cool and unique character? Yeah. Good times.

Punisher #3 dropped from the number 65 spot to the number 88 spot. Keep in mind that this is a title that debuted at the number 11 spot just two months ago! This is brilliant! I am rooting for this title to become a Dead Title Walking in just its fourth issue. Marvel Comics deserves no success with this lame mantle swap Punisher after being so unhinged about Frank Castle.

Blue Beetle #5 ticked up from the number 163 spot to the number 159 spot. To expect a Jamie Reyes title to not be a dead walking title is like expecting the Earth to stop revolving around the Sun.

Speed Force #3 was unranked for the second straight month. This title has performed so epically poorly that I am starting to just feel sorry for DC Comics.

191 Nightwing #109 (Titans Beast World) (DC Comics) (Resolicitation)

197 Spider-Boy #2 (Marvel Comics) (Resolicitation)

Unranked: Amazons Attack #4

There were zero legacy character titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50. This was worse in the Top 10 and flat in the Top 25 and Top 50 than in December 2023 when there was one legacy character title in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50.

Year-over-year numbers were down in the Top 10, flat in the Top 25, and up in the Top 50 as there was one legacy character title in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50 in January 2023.

Titans #7 bounced back up from the number 61 spot to the number 37 spot. This stopped a two-month slide in the rankings and is some good news for DC Comics.

Titans Beast World #4 took the number 57 spot. Titans Beast World #5 took the number 65 spot. Titans Beast World #6 took the number 93 spot. These types of sales rankings are to be expected and normal for a title that ships three issues in one month. The sales results would have been better if DC Comics had given readers a chance to breathe and spread these issues out over a couple of months.

Titans Beast World Tour Atlantis #1 took the number 151 spot. Titans Beast World Tour Star City #1 took the number 189 spot. These Titans Beast World one-shots continue to be total sales failures.

The battle for this category ends in a 3-3 tie between two drunk fighters. It is a bad sign that Marvel Comics is down in this category compared to one year ago and two years ago and by a wide margin, too. Both publishers continue to struggle in this category.

Marvel Comics won this pillow fight between two lightweights by a score of 5-0, which is exactly where we were a full two years ago. Neither publisher is tearing it up in this category. Both publishers have to examine what they are doing in this category and figure out how to have more success.

Blade #7 fell from the number 70 spot to the number 86 spot. This title struggles to string together two positive months in a row.

Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu: Gang War #2 fell from the number 154 spot and right out of the Top 200 to end up unranked. Ouch. To be unranked with just the second issue is brutal. Making Shang-Chi to be more like his MCU version has done nothing at all to help this character’s popularity.

Marvel’s Voices Legends #1  debuted outside of the Top 200 and unranked. DC Power 2024 #1 debuted outside of the Top 200 and unranked. This is no surprise. These types of titles stopped selling well years ago.

Dead Titles Walking

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, titles outside of the Top 100 are usually selling under the 18,000 unit sales mark. These are the Marvel Comics and DC Comics titles that are dead titles walking.

The Tini Howard Award For The Writer With The Most Dead Titles Walking

We have a four-way tie for the Tini Howard Award as there were four writers with two issues in the Dead Walking Titles category in January 2024!

Steve Orlando had two issues with 116 Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #4 at the number 116 spot and Miguel O’Hara – Spider-Man: 2099 #5 at the number 131 spot.

Robert Venditti had two issues with Wesley Dodds the Sandman #4 at the number 105 spot and Superman 78 The Metal Curtain #3 at the number 163 spot.

Tom King had two issues with Trinity Special #1 at the number 102 spot and Penguin #6 at the number 113 spot.

Alyssa Wong had two issues with Captain Marvel #4 at the number 137 spot and Star Wars Doctor Aphra #40 at the number 171 spot.

The first tie-breaker is the writer who has multiple issues of the same title gets eliminated first. That means Steve Orlando is out of the running.

The next tie-breaker is the writer who has a title that is either a limited series or a one-shot gets eliminated. That means Tom King and Robert Venditti get eliminated.

Therefore, the Tini Howard Award for December 2024 goes to…Alyssa Wong! Wong would have won this award even if King and Venditti had two ongoing titles instead of a limited series or one-shots. Tom King averaged the number 107 spot. Venditti averaged the number 134 spot. Wong averaged the number 154 spot. Wong was not going to be denied and started strong in 2023!

All right, that is it for January 2024 Will Marvel Comics continue its domination of the Top 200 in February 2024? We will find out. Until then, everyone stay safe and be good!
