Amazing Spider-Man #21

March 2023 Single Issue Comic Book Sales Rankings

It is time to check out the March 2023 single-issue comic book sales rankings. Things are getting murkier in terms of actual unit numbers. So, we will have to settle with going to ICv2 for their Top 200 sales rankings. It is not as good as actual unit numbers, but we have to work with what we get.

Keep in mind, that the Top 200 single-issue comic sales charts are based on orders tracked by the ComicHub system at local comic book shops selling American comics. This includes over 3,000 stores selling American comics worldwide. As always, it is important to remember that these rankings are also not actual sales. These rankings only represent the number of units ordered by local comic shops.

The Battle for the Top 10

  1. Amazing Spider-Man #21 (Marvel Comics)
  2. Batman #133 (DC Comics)
  3. Hallows’ Eve #1 (Marvel Comics)
  4. X-Men #20 (Marvel Comics)
  5. BRZRKR #12 (Of 12) (BOOM! Studios)
  6. Hulk #13 (Marvel Comics)
  7. Amazing Spider-Man #22 (Marvel Comics)
  8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Last Ronin Lost Years #2 (IDW Publishing)
  9. Doctor Strange #1 (Marvel Comics)
  10. Batman & The Joker The Deadly Duo #5 (Of 7) (DC Comics)

Marvel Comics dominated all publishers by placing six comics in the Top 10. However, this is actually down from the seven titles Marvel Comics had in the Top 10 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down from the eight titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 10 in March 2022.

Peter Parker remains utterly unstoppable. Not even Bruce Wayne can dethrone Petey at this point. However, what is really interesting is that an Amazing Spider-Man spin-off title in Hallows’ Eve #1 scored the number 3 spot! That is so impressive! It is fascinating to see this 1990s character blossoming into a character capable of such a strong debut. It seems like Marvel Comics just cannot do anything wrong with the Spider-Man franchise at the moment.

DC Comics meekly took second place with a mere two comics in the Top 10. Both are from the Batman franchise. Both star Bruce Wayne. This was even worse than the three titles that DC Comics had in the Top 10 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as DC Comics also had two titles in the Top 10 in March 2022.

This is troubling for DC Comics. We are now in the full reset of the DC Universe and DC Comics is still largely exactly where it was a year ago. Having said that, it is still early. Wonder Woman’s new creative team has not come on board, yet. We still have not gotten several of the new titles like the two Green Lantern titles, Titans, and Hawkgirl. So, it is still very early. But, at this point, the Top 10 remains unchanged.

BOOM! Studios and IDW Publishing tied for third place with one title apiece in the Top 10. I love BRZRKR so I was thrilled to see BRZRKR #12 scoring the number 5 spot! That is very impressive. TMNT Last Ronin Lost Years #2 nabbed the number 8 spot. There is no doubt that the power of the Turtles remains undiminished.

The Battle for the Top 25

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 11-25 range typically sell in the 65,000 to 50,000 unit range.

  1. Superman #2 (DC Comics)
  2. Rogue & Gambit #1 (Marvel Comics)
  3. Scarlet Witch #3 (Marvel Comics)
  4. Fantastic Four #5 (Marvel Comics)
  5. Avengers #66 (Marvel Comics)
  6. Wolverine #31 (Marvel Comics)
  7. Miles Morales Spider-Man #4 (Marvel Comics)
  8. Detective Comics #1069 (DC Comics)
  9. Spider-Gwen Shadow Clones #1 (Marvel Comics)
  10. Mary Jane & Black Cat #4 (Marvel Comics)
  11. Spider-Man #6 (Marvel Comics)
  12. Batman One Bad Day Ras Al Ghul #1 (One-Shot) (DC Comics)
  13. Adventures of Superman Jon Kent #1 (Of 6) (DC Comics)
  14. Action Comics #1052 (DC Comics)
  15. Cosmic Ghost Rider #1 (Marvel Comics)

Marvel Comics pummeled the competition by putting sixteen comics in the Top 25. However, this was down from the twenty titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 25 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down considerably as Marvel Comics had twenty-one titles in the Top 25 in March 2022.

It is great to see Fantastic Four #5 coming in at the number 14 spot. This new Fantastic Four title continues to be a treat to read every month. It is great that readers have responded to this title in such a positive fashion. It appears that Fantastic Four has the legs to remain a consistent Top 25 title.

DC Comics came in a very distant second place with just seven comics in the Top 25. Four of the seven comics came from the Batman franchise. All four Batman titles starred Bruce Wayne. However, this was an improvement over the four titles that DC Comics had in the Top 25 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up over the three titles that DC Comics had in the Top 25 in March 2022.

Things are starting to look better for DC Comics in terms of their Top 25 success. Sure, DC Comics is still lagging behind Marvel Comics in a startling fashion. But, we are starting to see some progress from DC Comics in the Top 25 and we still have plenty of new titles slated to roll out over the next few months.

BOOM! Studios and IDW Publishing stayed tied for third place with one title apiece in the Top 25.

The Battle for the Top 50

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 26-50 range typically sell in the 49,000 to 30,000 unit range.

  1. X-23 Deadly Regenesis #1 (Marvel Comics)
  2. Immoral X-Men #2 (Of 3) (Marvel Comics)
  3. Moon Knight #21 (Marvel Comics)
  4. Venom Lethal Protector II #1 (Of 5) (Marvel Comics)
  5. Venom #17 (2021) (Marvel Comics)
  6. DCeased War of The Undead Gods #7 (Of 8) (DC Comics)
  7. Batman vs Robin #5 (Of 5) (DC Comics)
  8. Nightcrawlers #2 (Of 3) (Marvel Comics)
  9. Star Wars #32 (Marvel Comics)
  10. Avengers Forever #15 (2021) (Marvel Comics)
  11. Poison Ivy #10 (2022) (DC Comics)
  12. Daredevil #9 (Marvel Comics)
  13. Amazing Spider-Man #20 (2022) (Resolicitation) (Marvel Comics)
  14. Star Wars Mandalorian #8 (Marvel Comics)
  15. Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #2 (Marvel Comics)
  16. Superman Lost #1 (Of 10) (DC Comics)
  17. Ghost Rider #12 (Marvel Comics)
  18. Nightwing #102 (DC Comics)
  19. Superman #1 (Resolicitation) (DC Comics)
  20. Hellcat #1 (Marvel Comics)
  21. Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 (Of 6) (DC Comics)
  22. Captain Marvel #47 (Marvel Comics)
  23. Spawn #339 (Image Comics)
  24. Batman Superman World’s Finest #13 (DC Comics)
  25. Predator #1 (Marvel Comics)

Marvel Comics crushed all publishers by putting thirty-two comics in the Top 50. This tied the thirty-two titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 50 in February 2023. However, year-over-year numbers were down from the thirty-five titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 50 in March 2022.

Moon Knight #21 suffered a large drop from the number 8 spot in February 2023 down to the number 28 spot. This is a surprising fall for Moon Knight which has been an impressive seller since its debut issue. Of course, it is way too early hit the panic button. This could just be an anomaly and Moon Knight may return to the Top 15 in the next month. So, let’s hold off a bit before rushing to any conclusions about the future sales success of Moon Knight.

Daredevil #9 also experienced a massive drop from the number 4 spot in February 2023 all the way out of the Top 25 and down to the number 37 spot. This is a shocking drop that flies in the face of the continued Top 10 success Daredevil has had since its debut. However, before anyone panics it is worth noting that Daredevil #9 did ship in the final week of March 2023. So, this month may definitely be an anomaly and Daredevil may return to the Top 10 in the next month. Let’s keep an eye on this.

Ghost Rider #12 also experienced a big drop going from the number 22 spot in February 2023 down to the number 42 spot. Again, I am not too concerned at this point. Let’s see what happens next month. It certainly would be disappointing for Marvel for Ghost Rider to transform from a dependable Top 25 title to a title that struggles to remain in the Top 50.

DC Comics came in second place with only fifteen comics in the Top 50. Eight of the fifteen titles are from the Batman franchise. We finally get Batman franchise titles starring someone other than Bruce Wayne with Poison Ivy and Nightwing. DC Comics only had two titles outside of the Batman franchise and the Superman franchise in the Top 50. That would be DCeased War of The Undead Gods #7 at the number 37 spot and Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 in the number 46 spot.

This was an improvement over the thirteen titles that DC Comics had in the Top 50 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up as DC Comics only had nine titles in the Top 50 in March 2022. Again, this is positive news for DC Comics. Sure, Marvel Comics still has a monstrous lead over DC Comics in the Top 50. But, at least we are seeing some signs of progress for DC Comics that may give DC fans some hope heading into the summer.

BOOM! Studios, IDW Publishing, and Image Comics all tied for third place with one title apiece in the Top 50. Image Comics was down from the four titles in the Top 50 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also down from the four titles that Image Comics had in the Top 50 in March 2022. March 2023 was a rough month for Image Comics in the Top 50.

The Battle for the Top 75

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 51-75 range typically sell in the 29,000 to 25,000 unit range.

  1. Gunslinger Spawn #18 (Image Comics)
  2. Star Wars Hidden Empire #4 (Of 5) (Marvel Comics)
  3. X-Force #38 (Marvel Comics)
  4. Justice Society of America #3 (Of 12) (DC Comics)
  5. Star Wars Darth Vader #32 (Marvel Comics)
  6. King Spawn #20 (Image Comics)
  7. Saga #62 (Image Comics)
  8. Star Wars the High Republic #6 (Marvel Comics)
  9. Human Target #12 (Of 12) (DC Comics)
  10. Riddler Year One #3 (Of 6) (DC Comics)
  11. The Flash #794 One-Minute War (DC Comics)
  12. Star Wars Yoda #5 (Marvel Comics)
  13. Joker The Man Who Stopped Laughing #6 (DC Comics)
  14. Harley Quinn #27 (DC Comics)
  15. Thor #32 (Marvel Comics)
  16. She-Hulk #11 (Marvel Comics)
  17. Star Wars: The High Republic – Blade #3 (Of 4) (Marvel Comics)
  18. Spider-Man Unforgiven #1 (Marvel Comics)
  19. Star Wars Bounty Hunters #32 (Marvel Comics)
  20. New Mutants Lethal Legion #1 (Marvel Comics)
  21. Clear #1 (Of 3) (Dark Horse Comics)
  22. Detective Comics #1070 (DC Comics)
  23. Vanish #5 (Image Comics)
  24. Thor #31 (Resolicitation) (Marvel Comics)
  25. Punisher #10 (Marvel Comics)

Marvel Comics annihilated everyone by taking first place with forty-five comics in the Top 75. This was even better than the forty-four titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 75 in February 2023. However, year-over-year numbers were down slightly from the forty-six titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 75 in March 2022.

DC Comics came in second place with only twenty-two comics in the Top 75. Twelve of the twenty-two titles are from the Batman franchise. This was up from the nineteen titles that DC Comics had in the Top 75 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up over the sixteen titles that DC Comics had in March 2022.

Image Comics finally broke loose from the other smaller publishers with five titles in the Top 75. This was down from the seven titles that Image Comics had in the Top 75 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were way down from the nine titles that Image Comics had in the Top 75 in March 2022.

BOOM! Studios, IDW Publishing, and Dark Horse Comics had one title apiece in the Top 75.

The Battle for the Top 100

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, the titles in the numbers 76-100 range typically sell in the 24,000 to 18,000 unit range.

  1. Dark Knights of Steel #10 (Of 12) (DC Comics)
  2. Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #1 (Of 4) (DC Comics)
  3. Action Comics #1053 (DC Comics)
  4. Phantom Road #1 (Image Comics)
  5. Captain America Symbol of Truth #11 (Marvel Comics)
  6. Immoral X-Men #1 (Of 3) (Marvel Comics)
  7. Bloodline Daughter of Blade #2 (Marvel Comics)
  8. Star Wars Han Solo & Chewbacca #10 (Marvel Comics)
  9. Invincible Iron Man #4 (Marvel Comics)
  10. Star Wars Return of the Jedi Jabba’s Palace #1 (Marvel Comics)
  11. Captain America Sentinel of Liberty #10 (Marvel Comics)
  12. Red Goblin #2 (Marvel Comics)
  13. Silver Surfer Ghost Light #2 (Marvel Comics)
  14. DC Horror Presents Sgt Rock Vs The Army of The Dead #6 (Of 6) (DC Comics)
  15. The Flash #795 One-Minute War (DC Comics)
  16. Something Is Killing The Children #30 (BOOM! Studios)
  17. Deadpool #5 (Marvel Comics)
  18. Amazing Spider-Man #19 (Resolicitation) (Marvel Comics)
  19. No One #1 (Of 10) (Image Comics)
  20. Nocterra #12 (Image Comics)
  21. Swamp Thing Green Hell #3 (Of 3) (DC Comics)
  22. House of Slaughter #13 (BOOM! Studios)
  23. Carnage #11 (Marvel Comics)
  24. I Hate Fairyland #5 (Image Comics)
  25. Danger Street #4 (Of 12) (DC Comics)

Marvel Comics cruised to an easy first-place finish with a whopping fifty-seven comics in the Top 100. This was actually down from the fifty-eight titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 100 in February 2023. However, Year-over-year numbers were up slightly from the fifty-six titles that Marvel Comics had in the Top 100 in March 2022.

DC Comics finished in a much distant second place with only twenty-nine comics in the Top 100. This was up slightly from the twenty-eight tiles that DC Comics had in the Top 100 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up from the twenty-seven titles that DC Comics had in the Top 100 in March 2022.

Image Comics took third place with nine titles in the Top 100. This was up slightly from the eight titles in the Top 100 in February 2023. However, year-over-year numbers were down from the twelve titles that Image Comics had in the Top 100 in March 2022.

BOOM! Studios came in fourth place with three titles in the Top 100.

IDW Publishing and Dark Horse Comics tied for fifth place with one title apiece in the Top 100.

Writers With More Than One Title In The Top 100

I am not going to include writers who have more than one new issue of the same title in the Top 100. The point of this honor is to identify the writers who are able to have success with multiple different properties. So, we say sorry to Zeb Wells who had two new issues of Amazing Spider-Man in the Top 100.

There were quite a few writers who placed two new issues from different properties in the Top 100.

Chip Zdarsky had two new issues in the Top 100 from Batman and Daredevil. That is crazy impressive. Look at Zdarsky killing it with two hot titles from both Marvel Comics and DC Comics.

Simon Spurrier also had two new issues in the Top 100 from both Marvel Comics and DC Comics. Those two properties were Detective Comics and Nightcrawlers.

Gerry Duggan had two titles in the Top 100 from X-Men and Invincible Iron Man.

Alex Paknadel had two new issues in the Top 100 from Carnage and Red Goblin.

Mark Waid had two new issues in the Top 100 from Batman vs. Robin and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. Both are wonderful reads. It is nice to see an old-school writer still kicking ass in the sales rankings.

There were two writers who managed the impressive feat of placing three new issues in the Top 100 from three different franchises.

Jed MacKay had three new issues in the Top 100 from Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, and Mary Jane & Black Cat. Absolutely incredible work by MacKay.

Jason Aaron had three new issues in the Top 100 from Punisher, Avengers, and Avengers Forever. Also, impressive.

However, neither MacKay nor Aaron won the award for March 2023. That is because Tom Taylor came flying into the ring from high above like Macho Man with a monstrous flying elbow drop on the competition! Taylor placed a ridiculous FIVE new issues in the Top 100 for March 2023 from Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent, Nightwing, DCeased War of the Undead Gods, Dark Knights of Steel, and Batman One Bad Day Ra’s Al Ghul. That is insane! Lord, Taylor! Don’t hurt ’em!

This is the most issues in the Top 100 from one writer that I have seen in a long time. Therefore, we are going to rename this category the Tom Taylor Award and give it to the writer with the most new issues from different properties in the Top 100. Let the competition begin!

Battle of the Franchises

Guess who won the Battle of the Franchises? Yeah, that guy Peter Parker. He is on an unstoppable hot streak as of late. The Spider-Man franchise took first place with three titles in the Top 10, seven titles in the Top 25, and ten titles in the Top 50.

Bruce Wayne used to ruthlessly rule the Top 10. Peter Parker has changed that as of late. The Batman franchise came in second place with two titles in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50.

The X-Men franchise has cooled off a bit since Jonathan Hickman left. However, The X-Men franchise still grabbed third place with one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50.

Like an RKO out of nowhere, the Superman franchise swooped into fourth place. It is questionable how long the Superman franchise will stay in the Top 5 of the Battle of the Franchises, but the franchise is here now with zero titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50.

The Avengers franchise rounds out the Top 5 with one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50.

Unranked: Shazam! Fury of the Gods Special: Shazamily Matters #1 (DC Comics) ($10)

Unranked: The Flash: One-Minute War – Start the Clock #1 (DC Comics) ($6)

As we normally do, we will address many of these debut issues in the franchises sections below. However, there are several debut issues that we will tackle here in this section.

Doctor Strange #1 scored a strong debut by taking the number 9 spot. Marvel Comics should be pleased with this result. Stephen Strange seems to be on a hot streak in the movie theaters and in the comic book market. There is increased interest in Strange’s character. However, Strange has never been a dominant seller in the sales charts. It will be interesting to see how well Doctor Strange does over the course of the next ten issues.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #1 debuted in the number 25 spot. This is actually not a bad debut for a character that is not that big of a name. Personally, I have never cared for Cosmic Ghost Rider. But, I know there is an audience for this character. Debuting at the number 25 spot indicates that Cosmic Ghost Rider may have a tough time staying in the Top 50 over the course of the next few issues. However, I do believe that Cosmic Ghost Rider has the chops to remain a consistent Top 75 title.

Hellcat #1 debuted in the number 45 spot. This is a bad debut. Usually, this is a sign that a title is going to plummet out of the Top 75 by the second or third issue and then struggle to stay in the Top 100. This is what I expect to see with Hellcat.

Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 debuted in the number 46 spot. Evidently, the Doom Patrol is stoppable because this was a disappointing debut. Now Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 did ship in the last week of March 2023. But, still, coming in so low indicates that there was not a ton of interest in this title regardless of the shipping schedule. I am guessing that Unstoppable Doom Patrol will drop out of the Top 75 in the next issue or two and then the question will be if it can remain in the Top 100.

Predator #1 debuted in the number 50 spot. Another bad debut. It looks like Disney has killed interest in the Predator franchise as they have with some of the other franchises that they have acquired over the years. Predator appears to be a title that is going to struggle to remain in the Top 100.

It’s Jeff #1 debuted in the number 108 spot. This is an awful debut number. But, to be fair, It’s Jeff is just a reprint of the digital Infinite Comic series from the Marvel Unlimited app that debuted in September 2021.

Clobberin’ Time #1 debuted at the number 149 spot. This is a hideous debut. Yes, Clobberin’ Time #1 shipped in the last week of March 2023, but that means nothing when a title debuts as low as the number 149 spot. Even if Clobbern’ Time #1 shipped earlier in the month, it still would have had an awful debut ranking.

Waller vs. Wildstorm #1 debuted unranked and outside of the Top 200. That is an unmitigated disaster. Evidently, Waller vs. Windstorm was a title that nobody was asking to receive. This is an embarrassing miss for DC Comics.

Big Events

27 Immoral X-Men #2 (Of 3) (Marvel Comics)

33 Nightcrawlers #2 (Of 3) (Marvel Comics)

40 Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #2 (Marvel Comics)

61 The Flash #794 One-Minute War (DC Comics)

77 Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #1 (Of 4) (DC Comics)

81 Immoral X-Men #1 (Of 3) (Resolicitation) (Marvel Comics)

90 The Flash #795 One-Minute War (DC Comics)

122 Wonder Woman #797 Revenge of The Gods (DC Comics)

131 Lazarus Planet Omega #1 (One-Shot) (Resolicitation) (DC Comics)

138 Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #2 (Of 4) (DC Comics)

181 The Flash #793 One-Minute War (Resolicitation) (DC Comics)

193 Amazing Spider-Man #18 Dark Web (Resolicitation) (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: Monkey Prince #12 (DC Comics)

Unranked: The Flash: One-Minute War – Start the Clock #1 (DC Comics)

It is rather quiet in the Big Events category at the moment. There is nothing really that major going on from either Marvel Comics or DC Comics at the moment.

Immoral X-Men #2 came in at the number 27. That is incredibly consistent for this big event story as Immoral X-Men #1 debuted at the number 26 spot. Marvel Comics should be pleased that Immoral X-Men largely retained all of its readers from the debut issue.

One-Minute War continues to finish well outside of the Top 50. However, at least the sales rankings are consistent as the Flash One-Minute War Special #1 debuted in the number 63 spot.

Lazarus Planet Revenge of the Gods is a bust. Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #1 debuting outside of the Top 75 is a big disappointment for DC Comics. Even more concerning is that Lazarus Planet Revenge of the Gods #2 fell well outside of the Top 100 by coming in at the number 138 spot. Of course, it is only fair to point out that Lazarus Planet Revenge of the Gods #2 did ship in the last week of March 2023. But, coming in at number 138 shows that this title was not going to do that much better even if it shipped earlier in the month.

Star Wars Franchise

34 Star Wars #32

39 Star Wars Mandalorian #8

52 Star Wars Hidden Empire #4 (Of 5)

55 Star Wars Darth Vader #32

58 Star Wars the High Republic #6

62 Star Wars Yoda #5

67 Star Wars: The High Republic – Blade #3 (Of 4)

69 Star Wars Bounty Hunters #32

83 Star Wars Han Solo & Chewbacca #10

85 Star Wars Return of the Jedi Jabba’s Palace #1

126 Star Wars the High Republic Blade #4

134 Star Wars Sana Starros #2

141 Star Wars Yoda #4 (Resolicitiation)

155 Star Wars The High Republic #7

176 Star Wars #31 (Resolicitation)

196 Star Wars Doctor Aphra #29 (Resolicitation)

The Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and two titles in the Top 50. This was worse than February 2023 when the Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were down as the Star Wars franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

Things are not looking good for the Star Wars franchise at the moment. The month-over-month numbers and the year-over-year numbers are both down. This does not surprise me that much. Disney’s Star Wars has been facing an uphill battle for a while now.

The sales rankings for Star Wars Hidden Empire, Star Wars Darth Vader, and Star Wars High Republic were all down. However, both Star Wars and Star Wars Yoda increased.

Star Wars Return of the Jedi Jabba’s Palace #1 had a poor debut coming in at the number 85 spot. There was not a ton of interest in this one-shot.

Star Wars Sana Starros #2 crashed and burned as it fell from the number 53 spot all the way down to the number 134 spot. This is no surprise. Normally when a title debuts outside of the Top 50 it usually falls out of the Top 100 in a month or two. Just chalk this up to more evidence that hiring YA novelists to write Marvel comic books does not lead to sales success.

Spider-Man Franchise

1 Amazing Spider-Man #21

3 Hallows’ Eve #1

7 Amazing Spider-Man #22

17 Miles Morales Spider-Man #4

19 Spider-Gwen Shadow Clones #1

20 Mary Jane & Black Cat #4

21 Spider-Man #6

29 Venom Lethal Protector II #1 (Of 5)

The Spider-Man franchise had three titles in the Top 10, seven titles in the Top 25, and ten titles in the Top 50. This was worse in the Top 10, the same in the Top 25, and better in the Top 50 than in February 2023 when the Spider-Man franchise had four titles in the Top 10, seven titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up as the Spider-Man franchise had three titles in the Top 10, eight titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

Peter Parker remains the star of the Spider-Man franchise as Amazing Spider-Man powers much of this franchise’s sales success. Amazing Spider-Man placed TWO new issues in the Top 7! That is utterly insane! Normally, when a title puts out two new issues in a month, the second issue comes in much lower than the first issue. Evidently, the rules do not apply to Amazing Spider-Man. Look, I am not a fan of Amazing Spider-Man, but you cannot argue with the success of this title. Placing two new issues in the Top 7 is just breathtaking.

What is also impressive is that the resolicitation for Amazing Spider-Man #20 took the number 38 spot! That is bonkers! The resolicitation for Amazing Spider-Man #19 took the number 93 spot which is also incredible. However, what is mind-blowing is that the resolicitation of Amazing Spider-Man #18 from January 2023 managed to take the number 193 spot! A comic book from two months ago still in the Top 200? Crazy.

Spider-Gwen Shadow Clones #1 debuted at the number 19 spot. This is a solid debut number and shows that there is still interest in Spider-Gwen’s character. What will be telling is if this title is able to remain a consistent Top 50 title.

Mary Jane & Black Cat #4 came in at the number 20 spot which is up considerably from the number 46 spot that this title had in February 2023. The pairing of these two popular ladies continues to attract readers.

Spider-Man #6 took the number 21 spot. Spider-Man remains incredibly consistent as this is close to the number 18 rating that Spider-Man had in February 2023. This is another positive sign that Marvel Comics has another hit on its hands.

Venom Lethal Protector II #1 debuted in the number 29 spot. This is a solid but not spectacular debut for this Venom mini-series. Of course, this comic book did ship in the final week of March 2023. I will be interested to see if this title can remain in the Top 50 for the duration of its mini-series.

Venom #17 took the number 30 spot. This is unusually low for Venom. It will be worth watching this title in the next month or two to see if this is a larger trend or a momentary hiccup in the sales charts.

Spider-Man Unforgiven #1 debuted at the number 68 spot. This is proof that not everything in the Spider-Man franchise is automatically a hot seller.

Red Goblin #2 plummeted from the number 15 spot all the way down to the number 87 spot. Ouch. That is awful. It looks like this Green Goblin knockoff had limited appeal to readers.

Carnage #11 came in at the number 98 spot. This is actually up from the number 113 spot that Carnage had in February 2023. However, reader interest in Carnage remains tepid as this title struggles to remain in the Top 100.

Gold Goblin #5 dropped from the number 62 spot all the way out of the Top 100 and down to the number 104 spot. Again, it appears that Green Goblin knockoffs do not interest readers all that much.

The X-Men franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50. This was exactly the same as what the X-Men franchise did in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also largely flat as the X-Men franchise had one title in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

X-Men #20 bounced back into the Top 10 going from the number 13 spot in February 2023 up to the number 4 spot. The main X-Men title remains a hot seller. Marvel Comics has to be pleased with this continued success even after Jonathan Hickman left the franchise.

Rogue & Gambit #1 debuted at the number 12 spot. This is a wonderful debut number and higher than I was anticipating for this title. But, I am not too terribly surprised as Rogue and Gambit have always been a popular couple. Everyone loves those two characters together.

Wolverine #31 bounced back up from the number 30 spot in February 2023 to the number 16 spot. Logan shows no signs of slowing down and remains the most popular character in the X-Men franchise.

X-23 Deadly Regenesis #1 had a solid but not spectacular debut coming in at the number 26 spot. My guess is that X-23 probably drops out of the Top 50 with the next issue or two but manages to stay in the Top 75.

Nightcrawlers #2 dropped from the number 14 spot and out of the Top 25 and down to the number 22 spot. However, this is just a three-issue series so I believe that Nightcrawlers will manage to finish up next month still in the Top 50.

Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants #2 suffered from a massive drop falling from the number 9 spot all the way out of the Top 25 and down to the number 40 spot. This was brutal. However, Storm & The Brotherhood of Mutants is also only a three-issue series. So, this title should manage to place its third and final issue in the Top 75.

X-Force #38 dropped from the number 31 spot down to the number 53 spot. I have confidence that X-Force will probably bounce back into the Top 50 next month.

New Mutants Lethal Legion #1 had a poor debut coming in at the number 70 spot. This is not a surprise. Charlie Jane Anders is the writer. This is another case of Marvel Comics hiring a writer who writes short stories and novels as well as non-fiction books and trying to shove them into superhero comic books. It never works. But, this has never stopped Marvel’s editorial staff. A debut this low indicates that New Mutants Lethal Legion will probably drop out of the Top 100 by the second or third issue.

Deadpool #5 continues its free fall in the sales charts as it suffered another big drop from the number 69 spot to the number 92 spot. Again, this is no surprise. Alyssa Wong is another short story writer and poet that Marvel Comics has shoved into superhero comic books. These types of writers always struggle. The proof is in the fact that everything Wong has ever written gets awful sales rankings.

It made no sense at all to place a non-superhero comic book writer on a title like Deadpool. Evidently, readers agree with me. It is pretty spectacular that a character as hugely popular as Deadpool may possibly drop out of the Top 100 by just the sixth or seventh issue.

Marauders #12 dropped from the number 80 spot all the way out of the Top 100 and to the number 119 spot. This title has been a train wreck since the start. So, seeing Marauders drop out of the Top 100 does not surprise me. Having said that, this title does tend to fluctuate so I would not be surprised to see it bob back up into that 80-90 range.

X-Treme X-Men #4 dropped from the number 81 spot down to the number 124 spot. I enjoyed this title. Evidently, I am the only person who has enjoyed it! Sometimes it’s like that.

Bishop War College #2 dropped like a rock from the number 61 spot all the way out of the Top 100 and down to the 136 spot. Ouch. Given the weak debut, this does not surprise me. However, I really did not think Bishop War College would be outside of the Top 125 by just the second issue. Again, the writer for Bishop War College is a TV script writer. We continue to see that when Marvel Comics hires non-superhero comic book writers that the sales suffer. I am not sure why Marvel’s editors have not figured out this simple fact.

X-Cellent #1 has an awful debut coming in all the way down at the number 161 spot. This appears to be a title that is going to slip out of the Top 200 in a quick fashion.

Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #2 dropped like a shot duck falling from the number 87 spot all the way down to the number 184 spot. Now, given the terrible debut number I did expect this title to drop out of the Top 100 with the second issue. However, I did not expect to see this title almost drop out of the Top 200 altogether with just the second issue. Now Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #2 did ship in the last week of March 2023. However, by barely making the Top 200 there was no way this issue was going to be in the Top 100 no matter when it shipped in March.

Again, I expected Betsy Braddock Captain Britain to crash and burn in spectacular fashion. This is a mantle swap character that has failed to catch on with any of Marvel Comics’ readers. It is also a Tini Howard-written comic and she has never had any sales success on anything she has done. It is surprising how Howard continues to get work from Marvel and DC. It is definitely a case of failing upward.

Unranked: Avengers: Rage of Ultron – Marvel Tales #1

The Avengers franchise had one title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50. This was better in the Top 10, but flat for the Top 25 and the Top 50 in February 2023 when the Avengers franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up as the Avengers franchise had one title in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

Hulk #13 continues to be the gem of the Avengers franchise as Hulk #13 grabbed the number 6 spot. This title shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Scarlet Witch #3 bounced up from the number 17 spot in February 2023 to the number 13 spot. This is just amazing! Scarlet Witch actually climbing up the rankings between issues #2 and #3? That is impressive and is not often seen. Scarlet Witch was a total miss for me, but there is no denying that this new title is generating excellent reader interest.

Avengers #66 climbed up the rankings going from the number 24 spot up to the number 15 spot. It has been fantastic to watch Avengers steadily rise up the sales rankings every month. Hopefully, Marvel Comics has revitalized its flagship team title and Avengers can remain a consistent Top 25 seller.

Captain Marvel #47 shot up the sales rankings going from the number 91 spot up to the number 47 spot! That is amazing. Captain Marvel has been mired in that 90-120 range for an eternity. This sudden surge has to be due to the fact that Captain Marvel is in the middle of a story that is also crossing over with the incredibly popular X-Men title. This is one way to help bolster the sales of a title that struggles to sneak into the bottom of the Top 100.

It could be that Marvel Comics announced that Captain Marvel is ending with issue #50 and this caused readers to hop aboard Captain Marvel #47 to see what is going on with this title before it ends. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how Captain Marvel performs as it heads to its final issue in the next few months.

Thor #32 dropped from the number 35 spot all the way down to the number 65 spot. This is a hell of a drop and one that completely surprised me. Torunn Grønbekk replaced Donny Cates as the writer with Thor #29. Grønbekk wrote Thor #30, Cates wrote Thor #31 and Grønbekk wrote Thor #32 which kicked off a brand new story arc.

This sudden drop in the sales rankings appears to point to a sizable portion of the readership dropping Thor once Cates left and Grønbekk took over with a new story arc with Thor #32. Thor has been a monster seller for Marvel Comics and it would be a real blow if Thor no longer remained a consistent Top 25 title. It will be interesting to watch how Thor performs in the sales rankings under Grønbekk’s guidance.

She-Hulk #11 managed to climb back up from the number 74 spot up to the number 66 spot. This is still a far cry from the beginning of this title when it was scoring Top 10 and Top 25 sales rankings. It would be nice if She-Hulk could manage to rebound back into the Top 50 and be able to remain there on a consistent basis.

Captain America Symbol of Truth #11 climbed up from the number 96 spot to the number 80 spot. Meanwhile, Captain America Sentinel of Liberty #10 crashed down from the number 57 spot to the number 86 spot.

This does not surprise me at all. Look, I do believe that robbing Sam Wilson of his own unique identity is a bad move. I also believe that having two Captain America’s operating at the same time is a dumb idea. But, the fact remains that Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly have been awful on Captain America Sentinel of Liberty. Lanzing and Kelly have done Steve Rogers dirty and delivered a largely unreadable story. Meanwhile, Tochi Onyebuichi has honored and respected Sam Wilson and delivered a much more fun story.

Invincible Iron Man #4 continues to drop in the sales rankings as it falls from the number 42 spot down to the number 84 spot. Tony Stark has always been my favorite Marvel character, but this new Invincible Iron Man title has started off as a dull redux of a prior storyline. I dropped the title after the second issue. It looks like other readers have done the same.

Of course, I have to be fair and point out that Invincible Iron Man #4 did ship in the last week of March 2023. So, there is a chance that this title may climb back up into the Top 50 next month. This is going to be an interesting title to watch.

I Am Iron Man #1 was a sales dud as it debuted at the number 106 spot. Marvel Comics continues to have a tough time figuring out the best way to package and market Tony Stark.

Black Panther #15 fell from the number 77 spot and out of the Top 100 and all the way down to number 112. Black Panther continues to struggle to crack the Top 100 on a consistent basis. This is such an incredibly underperforming title.

Avengers Beyond #1 had a terrible debut coming in at the number 113 spot. Yes, Avengers Beyond #1 shipped in the last week of March 2023, but even coming out earlier in the month would not have impacted the ranking that much considering how low it debuted. It appears that Avengers Beyond is certainly going to finish its five-issue mini-series well outside of the Top 100.

Joe Fixit #3 fell from the number 85 spot all the way out of the Top 100 and down to the number 137 spot. Wow. This title has shed readers at a massive rate. I really enjoyed Joe Fixit’s 1990s nostalgia-infused story. Evidently, I am the only one who has! This title has clearly been a miss with readers.

Wasp continues its spectacular free fall in the sales rankings. Wasp #3 fell from the number 117 spot all the way down to the number 182 spot. This title has lost readers at an alarming rate. It appears that the Wasp mini-series will conclude outside of the Top 200 and unranked. Once again, Marvel Comics is learning that nobody is really interested in the Wasp whether the Janet van Dyne version or the Nadia van Dyne version.

Monica Rambeau Photon continues to plummet down the sales rankings. Monica Rambeau Photon #4 fell from the number 133 spot all the way down to the number 200. Wow. This title just barely avoided being unranked by its fourth issue. I think it is safe to say that this five-issue mini-series will conclude out of the Top 200 and unranked.

Again, this is no surprise. Monica Rambeau Photon is written by a sociology professor. Again, why Marvel Comics thinks that people who are not actual comic book writers can successfully write a Marvel comic book is beyond me.

The Batman franchise had two titles in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50. This was better than February 2023 when the Batman franchise had two titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and seven titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were largely flat as the Batman franchise had two titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

Batman & The Joker The Deadly Duo #5 continues to be a hot seller by grabbing the number 10 spot. Evidently, readers cannot get enough of any title starring Bruce Wayne and the Prince of Crime. This title was a miss for me, but obviously, I am in the vast minority. DC Comics cannot go wrong rolling out a title starring Bruce Wayne and the Joker.

Detective Comics #1069 kicked off a new story arc and performed very well by grabbing the number 18 spot. However, Detective Comics #1070 fell all the way down to the number 72 spot. Detective Comics #1070 did come out in the final week of March 2023, but even coming out earlier in the month may not have been enough to get this issue in the Top 50 given how low it came in the rankings.

Poison Ivy #10 fell from the number 27 spot down to the number 36 spot. Poison Ivy is an interesting study. This title started off as an eight-issue mini-series that got insanely good sales numbers. Seriously. I was surprised!

Therefore, DC Comics transitioned Poison Ivy into an ongoing title. However, since that happened, Poison Ivy has begun to fall in the sales rankings. It will be interesting to see how Poison Ivy performs over the next few months.

Nightwing #102 climbed up from the number 47 spot to the number 43 spot. This is unfortunate. It appears that Nightwing has reverted back to its normal state of occupying the numbers 40-49 range in the sales rankings. DC Comics had a huge opportunity to capitalize off the ending of Dark Crisis and the increased readership that pushed Nightwing into the Top 10. It appears that Tom Taylor failed to deliver a story that could convince all of those new readers to stay on Nightwing for the long haul.

Batman Superman World’s Finest #13 rose up from the 52 spot to the number 49 spot. I absolutely adore Batman Superman World’s Finest. It is too bad that this title is no longer a consistent Top 25 seller.

Joker The Man Who Stopped Laughing #6 fell from the number 55 spot down to the number 63 spot. The continued downward trend for this title does not surprise me. I have found this title to be rather uninteresting and dull. I have a feeling that we will continue to see this title slowly drop in the sales rankings.

Harley Quinn #27 popped up from the number 94 spot to the number 64 spot. This is probably because Harley Quinn #27 was Stephanie Phillips’ final issue. I guess all Phillips had to do to get a sales spike was to leave the title. It is odd.

But, do not fear, because Harley Quinn #28 plummeted down to the number 132 spot. Harley Quinn #28 was the debut of Tini Howard taking over as writer of this title. Again, Howard continues to be a sales dud wherever she goes. I am still waiting for someone to tell me what it is about her as a writer that Marvel Comics and DC Comics find so irresistible. I mean, rock on Howard. You never sell well but you keep getting the two biggest comic book publishers falling all over themselves to give you work. That is damn impressive. Seriously.

Again, to be fair, Harley Quinn #28 did ship in the final week of March 2023. But, such a low number as the 132 spot indicates that even shipping earlier in the month probably would not have resulted in a finish much better than the low 90s or high 100s in the sales rankings.

It sucks that DC Comics keeps saddling a character as wonderful as Harley Quinn with such terrible writers who fail to succeed in the sales rankings. We can only hope that at some point DC Comics respects Harley Quinn enough to put a legit comic book writer in charge of this title and hopefully restore Harley to her previous glory. There is no excuse for a character as popular as Harley Quinn to be selling this poorly.

Speaking of bad comic book writers who never had any sales success, Tee Franklin’s Harley Quinn The Animated Series Legion of Bats #6 concluded in the number 190 spot. Whew! This title just barely avoided concluding this mini-series outside of the Top 200 and unranked! Of course, I am not surprised at all that this title was a sales bomb.

Things do not look much better for Harley Quinn’s newest title. Multiversity Harley Screws Up The DCU #1 had a hideous debut coming in at the number 121 spot. It looks like this six-issue mini-series stands a good chance of concluding its story unranked and outside of the Top 200.

Punchline The Gotham Game #5 came in at the number 101 spot. Then Punchline The Gotham Game #6 delivered the conclusion of this mini-series by coming in at the number 168 spot. Punchline’s mini-series failed to find much success in the sales rankings.

DC Comics definitely has to be disappointed by the performance of this mini-series. I am sure that DC Comics was hoping to have another old-school Harley Quinn-type hit on their hands with Punchline. Personally, I am not that surprised. I thought Punchline had massive potential when she first debuted. However, once I saw that DC Comics put Tini Howard on Punchline The Gotham Game I immediately tempered my expectations. I still think Punchline has tons of potential. This character just needs to be paired up with a better writer.

Catwoman #53 took the number 111 spot. Tini Howard continues to struggle to get readers excited about this title. That is too bad because Nico Leon’s artwork has been brilliant on this title. I wish Leon got a better story to work with on this title. It continues to be unacceptable for a character as iconic as Catwoman to be selling this poorly.

Batgirls #16 came in at the number 125 spot. This is about where we usually find this title. DC Comics is finally mercifully putting Batgirl down by canceling this title with Batgirls #19. This title has never sold well. It is unfortunate because Batgirls stars a couple of excellent characters. But, the fact is that Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad are not good superhero comic book writers. Everything they touch turns to coal and sells like crap.

Tim Drake Robin #6 came in at the number 151 spot. Tim Drake Robin #7 fell out of the Top 200 and was unranked. Tim Drake Robin has been an unmitigated disaster. It has been so awful that DC Comics has announced that they are canceling this title with Tim Drake Robin #10.

Nobody should be surprised by how awfully Tim Drake Robin has performed. Meghan Fitzmartin is another writer who is not a comic book writer. She is a TV writer that DC Comics has awkwardly stuffed into superhero comic books. I have absolutely no idea why DC Comics thought this was a good idea. Again, non-comic book writers with no background in the superhero genre never succeed in the sales rankings.

Look, I have never been a Tim Drake fan. My favorite Robin was Dick Grayson. Jason Todd was my second favorite Robin. Damien Wayne is my third favorite Robin. No disrespect meant at all to Tim Drake’s fans, but the character never really clicked with me. But I totally understand and get why some fans love Tim Drake’s character.

I feel terrible for Tim Drake fans. First, Tim was retconned in a controversial fashion. Then Tim’s character is saddled with Fitzmartin as the writer of his title and given one of the worst comics I have read in a long time. Honestly, DC Comics may have completely broken Tim’s character at this point. It is going to be hard for Tim Drake’s character to recover from all of this.

Superman Franchise

11 Superman #2

23 Adventures of Superman Jon Kent #1 (Of 6)

24 Action Comics #1052

41 Superman Lost #1 (Of 10)

44 Superman #1 (Resolicitation)

49 Batman Superman World’s Finest #13

78 Action Comics #1053

The Superman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and six titles in the Top 50. This was worse in the Top 10 but better in the Top 25 and Top 50 than in February 2023 when the Superman franchise had one title in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up as the Superman franchise had one title in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50.

Superman #2 dropped from the number 5 spot down to the number 11 spot. That is not a big drop at all. However, it does indicate that Superman is not going to be a continual Top 10 seller every month. I don’t think that surprises anyone. It is far more realistic for DC Comics to hope that this new Superman title is able to become a consistent Top 25 title every month. It will be interesting to watch what happens over the next few months. Personally, I am hoping for the best for Clark Kent!

Adventures of Superman Jon Kent #1 debuted at the number 23 spot. This is not a great debut, but it is not a bad one, either. This kind of debut usually indicates that the second issue will certainly be outside of the Top 25 but should probably stay in the lower part of the Top 50.

Jon Kent is a polarizing character that readers either hate or love. There is usually no in-between. This makes it hard to handicap the future sales success of this title. I have a feeling that Adventures of Superman Jon Kent will probably end its six-issue mini-series outside of the Top 75 but still in the Top 100. This will be interesting to watch!

Action Comics #1052 actually climbed up a single spot from the number 25 spot to the number 24 spot. Such incredible consistency is a positive sign for this new direction for Action Comics. DC Comics should be relatively happy with this result. If Action Comics can also become a Top 25 seller then that would be a big win for DC Comics.

However, the bad news is that Action Comics #1053 plummeted to the number 78 spot. Now, Action Comics #1052 did come out in the last week of March 2023, so it is quite possible that Action Comics can sneak back into the Top 50 next month. Expecting a Top 25 finish next month might be hoping for too much.

Superman Lost #1 debuted at the number 41 spot. That is a rather disappointing result. This ten-issue mini-series takes place in its own world separate from what is going on in Superman and Action Comics. It looks like interest in this Christopher Priest tale is rather muted. It is going to be tough for this title to stay in the Top 50 next month. In fact, I would imagine that Superman Lost ends up falling into the Top 100 in the next few issues.

Wonder Woman Franchise

77 Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #1 (Of 4)

122 Wonder Woman #797 Revenge of The Gods

138 Lazarus Planet Revenge of The Gods #2 (Of 4)

The Wonder Woman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. This was the same as in February 2023 when the Wonder Woman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were also the same as the Wonder Woman franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50.

There is nothing to see here. The Wonder Woman franchise is still a disaster and Lazarus Planet Revenge of the Gods has not helped any. The new creative team cannot arrive on Wonder Woman soon enough.

Justice League Franchise

61 The Flash #794 One-Minute War

76 Dark Knights of Steel #10 (Of 12)

90 The Flash #795 One-Minute War

179 Black Adam #9 (Of 12)

181 The Flash #793 One-Minute War (Resolicitation)

Unranked: The Flash: One-Minute War – Start the Clock #1 ($6)

The Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. This was the same as February 2023 when the Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were also the same as the Justice League franchise had zero titles in the Top 10, zero titles in the Top 25, and zero titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

The Justice League franchise continues to lay dormant. Right now poor Wally West is having to do all the heavy lifting. One good sign is that the One-Minute War, while not being a hot seller, has been very consistent over the past two months.

Mantle Swap Titles

17 Miles Morales Spider-Man #4 (Marvel Comics)

23 Adventures of Superman Jon Kent #1 (Of 6) (DC Comics)

37 Daredevil #9 (Marvel Comics)

47 Captain Marvel #47 (Marvel Comics)

80 Captain America Symbol of Truth #11 (Marvel Comics)

171 Blue Beetle Graduation Day #4 (Of 6) (DC Comics)

178 Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #1 (Resolicitation) (Marvel Comics)

179 Black Adam #9 (Of 12) (DC Comics)

184 Betsy Braddock Captain Britain #2 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #4 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: GCPD: The Blue Wall #6 (DC Comics)

Unranked: Blue Beetle Graduation Day #5

There were zero mantle swap titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50. This was the same in the Top 10 and Top 25, but better in the Top 50 than in February 2023 when there were two mantle swap titles in the Top 10, two titles in the Top 25, and two titles in the Top 50.

This category continues to be largely underwhelming. Miles Morales and Daredevil have to carry the banner for this category every month. I do think next month will see Daredevil rise back up the rankings while Miles continues his slow descent in the rankings.

Blue Beetle Graduation Day #4 continues to sell poorly as it came in at the number 171 spot. Blue Beetle Graduation Day #5 was out of the Top 200 and unranked. However, Blue Beetle Graduation Day #5 did ship the final week of March 2023. So, there is still a chance for Blue Beetle Graduation Day to conclude its six-issue mini-series in the Top 200.

Black Adam #9 continues its slide down the rankings as if fell from the 158 spot down to the 179 spot. Whichever DC editor thought this title was a great idea probably needs to be relieved of their duties.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #4 was unranked. This title has been unranked since just the second issue. When this title debuted at the number 82 spot, it only made sense that this five-issue mini-series was going to conclude outside of the Top 200 and unranked.

GCPD: The Blue Wall #6 was unranked. Again, this is no surprise as this title debuted at the number 191 spot and has been unranked since the second issue. This mini-series has now concluded. Clearly, DC Comics misread the potential reader interest in this title.

Legacy Character Titles

26 X-23 Deadly Regenesis #1 (Marvel Comics)

32 Batman vs Robin #5 (Of 5) (DC Comics)

43 Nightwing #102 (DC Comics)

61 The Flash #794 One-Minute War (DC Comics)

70 New Mutants Lethal Legion #1 (Marvel Comics)

82 Bloodline Daughter of Blade #2 (Marvel Comics)

90 The Flash #795 One-Minute War (DC Comics)

125 Batgirls #16 (DC Comics)

127 Stargirl The Lost Children #4 (Of 6) (DC Comics)

151 Tim Drake Robin #6 (DC Comics)

181 The Flash #793 One-Minute War (Resolicitation) (DC Comics)

Unranked: Tim Drake: Robin #7 (DC Comics)

Unranked: The Flash: One-Minute War – Start the Clock #1 (DC Comics) ($6)

Unranked Stargirl: The Lost Children #5

There were zero legacy character titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and four titles in the Top 50. This was up from February 2023 when there were zero legacy characters in the Top 10, one in the Top 25, and two in the Top 50.

X-23 gets the honor of being the highest-rated legacy character. This is no surprise. I have never been a fan of X-23, but I know plenty of people who love this character. Having said that, I think that X-23 will gradually fall below both Dick Grayson and Wally West in the sales rankings.

Bloodline Daughter of Blade #2 crashed and burned in spectacular fashion as it fell from the number 16 spot all the way down to the number 82 spot. Good lord! Now, I expected this title would experience some drop between the first and second issues. However, given that it debuted in the number 16 spot I thought that the second issue would at least remain in the Top 50. It seems that this title is destined to fall outside of the Top 100 with the next issue.

Clearly, readers hopped aboard this title due to Blade being extremely popular and then Danny Lore’s writing chased them right off of this title. Lore is another writer that is a YA novelist who has dabbled in non-superhero comic books. Once again, this type of writer fails when having to write a mainstream superhero comic book. I am not sure when Marvel Comics and DC Comics are going to figure this fact out.

Stargirl The Lost Children #4 came in at the number 127 spot. This is almost the same as the number 125 spot the previous issue had in January 2023. Stargirl The Lost Children #5 was unranked. However, to be fair, this issue was released in the final week of March 2023. So, there is still a chance that the final issue of this six-issue mini-series can finish in the Top 200.

I am not that surprised that Stargirl The Lost Children is not selling that well. Stargirl has never been a popular character despite Geoff Johns’ best attempts to constantly shove her into the spotlight.

The Legacy Character category continues to lack a really strong seller. Also, this category now has two titles that are being canceled due to low sales numbers.

200 Monica Rambeau Photon #4 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #4 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: GCPD: The Blue Wall #6 (DC Comics)

Unranked Stargirl: The Lost Children #5

There was one female lead title in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and eight titles in the Top 50. This was better than February 2023 when there was one female lead title in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up as there was one female lead title in the Top 10, four titles in the Top 25, and five titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

Marvel placed four female lead titles in the Top 25. Month-over-month numbers were up sharply as Marvel Comics only had one female lead title in the Top 25 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were flat as Marvel Comics had four female lead titles in the Top 25 in March 2022.

DC Comics had zero female lead titles in the Top 25. This is atrocious and is the third straight month that DC Comics has had zero female lead titles in the Top 25. Year-over-year numbers were flat as DC Comics also had zero female lead titles in the Top 25 in March 2022. This is absolutely unacceptable and DC Comics should be embarrassed.

Marvel Comics placed seven female lead titles in the Top 50. Month-over-month numbers were up as Marvel Comics had four female lead titles in the Top 50 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up as Marvel Comics had five female lead titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

DC had one female lead title in the Top 50. Month-over-month numbers were flat as DC Comics only had one female lead title in the Top 50 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had three female lead titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

Marvel had eight female lead titles in the Top 75. Month-over-month numbers were up as Marvel Comics had six female lead titles in the Top 75 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics had six female lead titles in the Top 75 in March 2022.

DC Comics had just two female lead titles in the Top 75. Month-over-month numbers were up as DC Comics only had one female lead title in the Top 75 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up as DC Comics had just one female lead title in the Top 75 in March 2022.

Marvel put nine female lead titles in the Top 100. Month-over-month numbers were up as Marvel Comics had eight female lead titles in the Top 100 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up as Marvel Comics had seven female lead titles in the Top 100 in March 2022.

DC placed a paltry two female lead titles in the Top 100. Month-over-month numbers were flat as DC Comics also had two female lead titles in the Top 100 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were down as DC Comics had three female lead titles in the Top 100 in March 2022.

Marvel Comics is absolutely destroying DC Comics in this category. It is a one-sided beatdown. This makes no sense at all as I firmly believe that DC Comics actually has a better stable of female superheroes than Marvel Comics. DC Comics should be embarrassed. DC Comics needs to assess the writers and editors that they assign to their female lead titles because the current approach is obviously failing in a miserable fashion.

The Top Minority Lead Titles

Unranked: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #4 (Marvel Comics)

Unranked: Blue Beetle Graduation Day #5

Unranked: GCPD: The Blue Wall #6 (DC Comics)

Unranked: Monkey Prince #12 (DC Comics)

There were zero minority lead titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and two titles in the Top 50. This was worse than February 2023 when there were two minority lead titles in the Top 10, three titles in the Top 25, and three titles in the Top 50. Year-over-year numbers were up as there were zero minority lead titles in the Top 10, one title in the Top 25, and one title in the Top 50 in March 2022.

Overall, sales in this category continue to be lower than they should be and lag far behind the Female Lead category. There is no reason that Black Panther and a title starring Sam Wilson should be selling this poorly. Both Marvel Comics and DC Comics need to examine how they are handling these titles and figure out how to generate more sales success in this category.

Marvel Comics had one minority lead title in the Top 25. Month-over-month numbers were down considerably as Marvel Comics had three minority lead titles in the Top 25 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were the same as Marvel Comics also had one minority lead title in the Top 25 in March 2022.

DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 25. Month-over-month numbers were the same as DC Comics also had zero minority lead titles in the Top 25 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also the same as DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 25 in March 2022.

Marvel had two minority lead titles in the Top 50. Month-over-month numbers were down as Marvel Comics had three minority lead titles in the Top 50 in February 2023. On the other hand, year-over-year numbers were up as Marvel Comics only had one minority lead title in the Top 50 in March 2022.

DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 50. Month-over-month numbers were the same as DC Comics also had zero minority lead titles in the Top 50 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also the same as DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 50 in March 2022.

Marvel had four minority lead titles in the Top 100. Month-over-month numbers were down considerably as Marvel Comics had eight minority lead titles in the Top 100 in February 2023. On the other hand, year-over-year numbers were up slightly as Marvel Comics had three minority lead titles in the Top 100 in March 2022.

DC Comics had zero minority lead titles in the Top 100. Month-over-month numbers were down as DC Comics had one minority lead title in the Top 100 in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also the same as DC Comics had one minority lead title in the Top 100 in March 2022.

DC Comics should be ashamed. They have done an awful job in this category. Whatever approach DC Comics is currently taking in this category needs to change. There is no reason for DC Comics to not even be remotely competitive in this category.

Let’s take a look at the diversity of representation among the Minority Lead Category. Eleven of the titles starred Black lead characters. Three of the titles starred Asian lead characters. Two titles starred Hispanic lead characters. No other groups were represented. Both Marvel Comics and DC Comics still need to improve the diversity of representation in this category.

Dead Titles Walking

Based on historical numbers from the Comichron as well as projections through April 2022, titles outside of the Top 100 are usually selling under the 18,000 unit sales mark. These are the Marvel Comics and DC Comics titles that are dead titles walking.

Marvel Comics had twenty-nine dead titles walking out of their eighty-three new titles in March 2023. This means that 35% of Marvel Comics’ new titles in March 2023 were dead titles walking. Three titles were unranked.

This was up considerably from the twenty-two dead titles walking that Marvel Comics had in February 2023. Year-over-year numbers were also up as Marvel Comics only had twenty-five dead titles walking in March 2022. These numbers should be concerning for Marvel Comics as they are trending in the wrong direction.

DC Comics had thirty-six dead titles walking out of DC Comics’ sixty-two new titles in March 2023. This means that an astounding 58% of the new DC Comics’ titles in March 2023 were dead titles walking. DC Comics had a whopping fourteen titles that were unranked.

This was up sharply from the nineteen dead titles walking that DC Comics had in February 2023 which comprised 45% of DC Comics’ new titles. Year-over-year numbers were up as DC Comics had twenty-six dead titles walking in March 2022.

This should be very troubling for DC Comics. We are now at the beginning of DC Comics doing a big relaunch of so many of their franchises. If DC Comics fails again then at some point Warner Bros. Discovery might want to make some radical changes.

Writers With Multiple Dead Titles Walking

All right, what about the writers with multiple dead titles walking in March 2023? First, I decided to exclude writers who had multiple issues of the same title in the Dead Walking Titles category. That would be Geoff Johns with two issues of Stargirl: The Lost Children, Josh Trujillo with two issues of Blue Beetle Graduation Day, and Marguerite Bennett with two issues of DC/RWBY. My reasoning is that the point of examining which writers have multiple dead titles walking is to see which writers fail to have success across different properties.

I am sad to report that several old-school writers whom I have loved dearly were also in this category. J.M. DeMatties, Peter David, Chris Claremont, and Paul Levitz. Paul Levitz, for chrissakes!! The beloved Legion legend himself! This makes me sad. I think I need a little alone time at this moment.

Normally, this category is dominated by the list of usual suspects who are not originally comic book writers. However, even big-name comic book writers are not immune from having multiple dead titles walking. Case in point, Tom King. King had two dead titles walking in Gotham City: Year One and Danger Street. To be fair, both titles are incredibly niche. But, still, even big-name writers are not a lock to sell niche properties.

John Ridley had two dead titles walking in Black Panther and GCPD: The Blue Wall.

Evan Narcisse had two dead titles walking in Waller vs. Wildstorm and Batman Gotham Knights Gilded City.

Now, it is pretty rare to see a writer with more than two dead titles walking in a single month. But, hold onto your hats because we have set a new record in March 2023!

Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad both had three dead titles walking in March 2023! The titles were Batgirls, Wonder Woman, and Lazarus Planet: Revenge of the Gods. This is rather amazing. If a DC editor ever hires these two writers again then that editor needs to be fired.

However, what is truly spectacular is that having three dead titles walking did not set a new record! No, instead it was Tini Howard with an absolute mind-shattering four dead titles walking in March 2023 that has set the new record! Those titles included Betsy Braddock Captain Britain, Punchline The Gotham Game, Catwoman, and Harley Quinn.

I am completely flabbergasted. I never thought I would see this many dead titles walking by a single writer in one month! In honor of this momentous occasion, we will now be naming the award for the writer with the most dead titles walking in a single month The Tini Howard Award! It is a prestigious award. Let the competition begin.

All right, that is it for March 2023 Will Marvel Comics continue its domination of the Top 200 in April 2023? We will find out. Until then, everyone stay safe and be good!
